wait sorry i forgot the topic lmao sorry. 🔥 for the death note fandom?
HI!!!! oh for the fandom specifically…………… hmm…………… oh i know, this is incredibly low hanging fruit but i think the manga and anime are brilliant for different reasons and deserve to be analyzed separately. please god please. i feel like most dn meta writers i've met use the manga because there's more of it and because it's much easier to grab screenshots of but the anime characters deserve their flowers as adaptations too!!!! like i don't think anime light ever realizes that heaven and hell don't exist even though that's also a canon fact in the anime and that changes so many of the original undertones. he's always running up that staircase. etc.
“I can’t keep doing this. Seriously— I’m at my limit.”
L, perched on his spinning office chair in the way which is peculiar to him alone, nibbles on his thumbnail and drifts slowly to the left. At the last moment, he grabs the desk, preventing himself from rotating past the point of no return.
“So you’ve said,” he comments blandly. “Many times now, actually. Yesterday, and the day before, and the day before that, and, if memory serves, several days before that, also. And yet you have persisted.” He smiles. “Perhaps you underestimate yourself?”
Mello scrubs his left hand over his face. He tries to use his right as little as possible these days. “No, it’s— it’s just not livable.”
“Evidence would suggest otherwise. You are notably quite alive.”
“It interferes with me eating. Sleeping. Getting dressed? It’s a nightmare. And when I’m in the bathroom, I have to angle my wrist close enough to the door, otherwise—”
“Otherwise my hand is bludgeoned against the bottom of the steel door,” Near says, presenting the faintly-bruised backside of his hand for L to inspect. “Also, I am forced to sit on the ground, or else be knocked over.”
“Sitting on the ground is typical for you,” L notes. “I don’t think that’s especially taxing.”
“I don’t like being on the ground outside of bathrooms. It isn’t sanitary.”
Before L can retort, Mello cuts in. “You don’t know what it’s like,” he says, desperation leaking into his tone. “He rolls onto the floor in the middle of the night. It almost dislocated my shoulder once.”
“Almost?” L says, unimpressed. Then: “I am well aware of the logistical difficulties and personal indignities associated with being handcuffed to another person long-term. I was chained to Kira for ninety-seven days, mind you. You have been in the same situation with Near for—” he glances to the calendar— “two and a half weeks.”
“But you did that for the case,” says Mello. “This is—”
“This is to teach the two of you how to work with one another,” L interrupts. “I remain unconvinced that you’ve mastered that skill. Now, if you’ll excuse me—” he makes a shooing motion— “I have many important matters to attend to.”
If you had asked me this when I was in middle/high school, the answer absolutely would have been The Girl Who Could Fly by Victoria Forester. Because I was a gay and autistic and trans child, and this was my first exposure to the concept of conversion therapy (and empowerment that it’s wrong and the things that make you unique are worth fighting for)
But as for now, I’m having a really hard time picking a favorite out of all my favorites. There’s the Murderbot Diaries, the Queen’s Thief, Discworld, the Thursday Murder Club, Iron Widow, the Goblin Emperor, This is How You Lose the Time War… augh!
I might genuinely have to go with a nonfiction book for this, simply because it’s the one I recommend to absolutely everyone: How to Keep House While Drowning by KC Davis. Straight up life changing. You can feel it untangling your brain and the knots of shame you’ve been tied up in. Also the chapter about moving away from the “equal work” mindset in relationships (fighting over who works harder and therefore doesn’t have to do additional care tasks) towards a “fair rest” mindset (it’s not about who works harder, it’s about making sure everybody gets the care and rest they need) is something I’m going to be walking therapy clients through for the rest of my career
14. Who is your favorite author?
I mean it’s definitely Terry Pratchett, but if it weren’t him, it would be Martha Wells. They both have such a way of combining humor with genuine commentary on the cruelties of the world, both small and large. They both encourage you to be kinder, to seek out and value the humanity/personhood in people you might otherwise dismiss, and show that a kinder world is possible. And in between all that they make you laugh out loud in public because a joke caught you completely by surprise. But Martha Wells talks about nonbinary folks and space socialism so like… it’s very possible she will overtake Pratchett in my heart someday
im sorry to be so predictable but i would like to ask u light for the headcanon meme
what a surprise to find you in my inbox asking about our special boy!! here goes......
Headcanon A: realistic
he's lactose intolerant. his preferences in fake milk are as follows: soy, macadamia, pistachio, almond, coconut. i think, like all good lactose intolerant people, he occasionally caves and drinks one of those banana milk things for children made from real dairy, and immediately panics and takes 12 lactaid.
Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious
i think he's extremely meticulous with grooming and has learned from youtube to thread his own eyebrows, trim his bangs, and give himself manicures. like i think he owns a full set of clippers, hair shears, nippers, tweezers, extractors etc like his bathroom cabinet is basically a sally's beauty supply. i also think he is the type to drop a rack on gadgets like the nuface and the foreo luna. but he won't wear makeup because that's for GIRLS >:(
Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends
i have already talked your ear off about this but i will say it until i'm blue in the face. light is always on the verge of tears. i truly believe, in my heart of hearts, that he excuses himself from various stressful situations to cry in the bathroom, splash his face with cold water, and then rally like it never happened.
Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.
might be ooc based on canon!light but i literally do not care at all: he's into Weird Fashion Guys. like the guys who wear techwear and cyberpunk style. like anything he wouldn't be caught dead wearing himself makes him salivate but he would never admit it. also he once saw L with a tiny ponytail and immediately blacked out.
18. it's absolutely criminal that the fandom has been sleeping on...
HALLE. she has wayyyyyy more on-page lines and overall character development than [almost non-existent male character, redacted for politeness but we all know who i am talking about here] but is conspicuously less discussed and depicted by far. i am not immune to the occasional delight of a mass-hallucinated figment of fanon so i am nawt telling anyone to stop but i AM telling everyone to put some love on halle too. together we can make her the new matt. in fact you could even do this by having her top him <3
19. you're mad/ashamed/horrified you actually kind of like...
honestly im drawing a blank. i think all my tastes and opinions are good and sexy (人 •͈ᴗ•͈)
a) first and foremost i hope you feel better soon b) i would like to ask the word ‘furthermore’
a) thank you so much, my fingers are So Crossed bc i hate being ill, and b) SHOCKINGLY I DON'T THINK I HAVE THIS IN ANY WIP DOC? so i wrote three sentences, adding to this wammy's-era ficlet:
Mello’s hand is warm on his wrist, if a little harsh. When he releases Near, the warmth lingers, spreading up the skin of his arm and over his neck and face. The older boy has an intent look about him as he sets the box— which evidently contains a gift for Near— on one of the tables in the center of the room.
send me a word and, if i have it in a current WIP, i'll post the sentence or paragraph it appears in; if not, i'll write three sentences and share them here <3
