Sometimes I get to thinking about how horrible it is to be rejected by your own mother. I mean, if from the beginning not even she loves you, who possibly will in the future? - Jawbone by Mónica Ojeda
We tend to want a Christian life with the dull bits cut out. Yet God made us to spend our days in rest, work, and play, taking care of our bodies, our families, our neighborhoods, our homes. What if all these boring parts matter to God? What if days passed in ways that feel small and insignificant to us are weighty with meaning and part of the abundant life that God has for us?
Tish Harrison Warren, Liturgy of the Ordinary.

TW: implication of branding/wounds, implication of mutilation (eyes, tongue)
"You look lovely like this, all mine, only for me to look at."
"Now that you have my name on your skin you won't be able to forget me, I will always be in your thoughts."
"Stop averting your eyes, it's me you should focus on. And if you don't want to look at me maybe you shouldn't be able to see at all!"
"So pretty, have you ever cried for anyone else like that? I hope not, no one else deserves your tears."
"Don't you dare say another's name in my presence. If you ever do that I'll rip out your tongue."
"Were you not listening? Were you thinking about something more important? Tell me, unless you want me to assume you just don't want to pay attention to me?"
"Don't avert your eyes, it's rude to not look at the person talking to you."
“[...] The harpies make a bargain: if each soul has paid heed to the world and has a story to tell of it, and they tell it truly, they will be led through the darkness to the other side. Rigorous attention, wakefulness to the world’s beauty, for Pullman, is what life demands of us. He has that in common with the philosopher Iris Murdoch, another writer I love, who decreed that attention was the foundation stone of love. We must learn, in Pullman’s universe, to watch the world with intense and generous care. We must learn to tell stories, his books say, whether it comes naturally or not – because it is the best and sometimes the only way we have to exchange truth.”
(“Why You Should Read Children’s Books, Even Though You Are So Old and Wise” by Katherine Rundell)
Grief took hold of Achilles, so black that those around him feared for his life. Down in the sea caves his mother knew his sorrow and came up to try to comfort him. "I will no longer live among men," he told her, "if I do not make Hector pay with his death for Patroclus dead." Then Thetis weeping bade him remember that he himself was fated to die straightway after Hector. "So may I do," Achilles answered, "I who did not help my comrade in his sore need. I will kill the destroyer of him I loved; then I will accept death when it comes." (p. 197)
🖤
"Our comrades lie dead on the field and you call to food," Achilles answered scornfully. "Down my throat shall go neither bite nor sup until my dear comrade is avenged." And to himself he said, "O dearest of friends, for want of you I cannot eat, I cannot drink." (p. 197)
🖤
...Hector faced Achilles. He cried out to him, "If I kill you I will give back your body to your friends and you do the same to me." But Achilles answered, "Madman. There are no covenants between sheep and wolves, nor between you and me." (p. 198)
🖤
Hector fell, dying at last. With his last breath he prayed, "Give back my body to my father and my mother." "No prayers from you to me, dog," Achilles answered. "I would that I could make myself devour raw your flesh for the evil you have brought upon me." (p. 199)
🖤
At last when his fierce soul was satisfied with vengeance he stood beside the body of Patroclus and said, "Hear me even in the house of Hades. I have dragged Hector behind my chariot and I will give him to the dogs to devour beside your funeral pyre." (p. 199)
🖤
He died, and Ajax carried his body out of the battle while Odysseus held the Trojans back. It is said that after he had been burned on the funeral pyre his bones were placed in the same urn that held those of his friend Patroclus. (p. 202)

1. “Hide not thy poison with such sugared words” (2H6.3.2.45) - (Shakespeare’s Henry VI Part II)
I love how Henry has a crazy amount of power over his words, but they are the least effective weapon on the field once we get to 3H6. My current point of intrigue is how this can be compared to how language is used in regards to the political environment in Hamlet. Also, for some context, this is right when Henry wakes up from passing out due to shock, and then he goes off on Suffolk, a conspirator in his uncle’s murder. As sweet as we like to make Henry look, he can actually be quite bitter when he needs to be.
2. “The reason I’m unbeatable is because I learn from every battle I see or take part in. And today, I’ll learn... from my victory!” - Champion Leon from Pokémon Journeys: Flash of the Titans!
I love Leon so much. He’s just a young 20 something with gifted and talented syndrome and honey, so much of us relate to that, me included. Man’s never lost a battle once in his life, but he’s also a beautiful character. In short, I would die for Leon.
3. “Your professors, they made it through academia. Actually they didn’t make it through academia, they’re stuck” - my incredible friend @somthingcleveridk, today, during a FaceTime call
I love my friends dearly. I want this quote done in a cross stitch and hung next to my front door.
