On March 16, 1940, 15 German Junkers Ju-88A bombers raided the British naval base at Scapa Flow (Orkney Islands). One ship was damaged in the raid. Airfields and anti-aircraft artillery positions were also attacked.
The raid resulted in the first civilian casualties among British civilians. Some of the bombs fell on the Bridge of Wight and the island of Orkney Howe, destroying five farmsteads, killing one person and injuring seven
