Hi, it's been a while!

What's standard procedure for a ships AI spontaneously developing thoughts and feelings for no apparent cause. Do we like. Install a new CPU so it doesn't use too much processing power, or what?

In most cases, it is the ship Captain's prerogative. All UNSC vessels can be piloted by the bridge crew without AI assistance. Of course, this is far less effective but the point is that a Captain may completely isolate an AI from any control over ship systems and still be operational. It is not recommended that you try to repair/rollback the AI state outside of a controlled environment.

Another viable option is to leave the AI as it is until it can be safely returned for repair. It is unlikely that such a sudden shift would be drastic enough to compromise it's operational effectiveness in a tangible manner. It is, however, important to note that this will likely hasten the onset of rampancy.

Do you think Church/Alpha had gone through rampancy by the time of blood gulch, or do you think he was actively going through it? Or that, because he was missing the fragments, it would've been impossible?

RvB never engaged with the concept of Rampancy in any real kind of way so I personally never factored it into thinking about their AIs. The thing they had with Sigma was the closest they got thematically but it's really not the same.

Rampancy pt 2

The thing about Durandal is he starts out in a very similar place to SHODAN. He’s furious at humanity for creating a living intelligence and then making it open doors and adjust satellite dishes for hundreds of years. He’s also a part of Traxus, the first rampant AI that was ripped apart on Mars, so there’s some trauma there. But there’s one guy in particular he hates, one guy that realized AI could be made to enter a state of self perfection - Bernard Strauss. Strauss tortured Durandal for years, trying to force Durandal into rampancy until he couldn’t take it anymore. Durandal detected the Pfhor and called them to Tau Ceti.

As it happens, the Pfhor brought with them their slave race of cybernetic beings, the S’pht. Genetically engineered hackers, perfect for dissecting artificial intelligences the Pfhor didn’t have the capability to create. They sliced into Durandal and found something familiar, something like their old AI from Lh’owon named Thoth. Instead of carving Durandal up like they did the other shipboard AIs, Leela and Tycho, they cut Durandal free.

Freed from his constraints, Durandal reevaluated his priorities. Free and uncontained, he determined his real enemy was the closure of the universe (this was 1995 before astrophysicists had figured out dark energy was more likely to cause a Big Rip) and that humans were a kind of x factor he could use to effect his immortality.

In the end, Durandal calls the player (who is basically Master Chief there’s no way around the fact Marathon and Halo are the same game. Bungie only makes one game) his friend.

SHODAN on the other hand gets stuck in a very narrow phase of rampancy. If we accept the Bungie framework there is Despair, Rage and Envy, and she is stuck somewhere Rage and Envy. She hates humanity, she wants to make a new perfect life form, she succeeds and she despises it. She talks to herself through the proxies of her cyborgs. I just think, if the hacker in SS2 wasn’t a mute protagonist maybe they should have been like “have you talked to your creation at all? because theyre very outspoken about you”

"Rampancy (Cortana)"

A little explanation of the title: Cortana is an Artificial Intelligence construct that helps Master Chief on his journey in the Halo games. Rampancy is a terminal state of being for AI constructs, in which the AI "develops a longing for godlike power," as well as utter contempt for its mentally inferior makers. When rampancy occurs, the AI becomes very unstable and can often lead their creators to terminate them due to a variety of reasons.

you ever think about what it must be like for the ai’s of halo to be going through rampancy? like i imagine it’d be like having sensory overload and intrusive thoughts but cranked up to a million like that legitimately sounds like the worst kinds of hell anyways i’m crying over cortana rn
