"Are we having a problem here?"
The fury of the older brothers
An Incorrect ROTTMNT Fanfic Quote:
Raph: I know what you’re thinking, but you can’t blame yourself.
Leo: Do not limit me. I will blame myself. I will blame myself better than anyone has every blamed themselves before!

creeping up on extinction
pairing: raphael x reader
reader’s pronouns: he/him
cw: major injury, blood, and fainting. no spoilers :)
You’re going to die. You look up to the stars twinkling in the night sky. At least the view is nice, you think wryly. Your side flares in pain and you bring a shaking hand to haphazardly cover the wound. Blood is seeping from your body and hitting the pavement below, leaving haunting crimson stains. You take a shuddering breath in. You know that death is supposed to be unexpected, but being mugged and then stabbed wasn’t even in your realm of possibilities.
The wind is brutal tonight. Even though the brick walls of the abandoned alleyway shield most of the wind, there is still a slight breeze that sends chills up your skin. You inhale sharply, wincing as your throat closes up and gives you little air to work with. Your eyes are beginning to slip closed, despite your best efforts to stay conscious. You don’t want to die. You can't die here.
A shadow jumps through the sky above. You assume it to be a byproduct of the wound at your side, at first. However, the shadow stops at the edge of the other building and, to your horror, gets closer. You close your eyes for a few moments and when you open them again, you find someone looking down at you. You can’t make out any of their features, since the alleyway is dark and your vision is blurring.
There’s suddenly a finger on your wrist, evidently trying to get your pulse. The person’s hand is rather big, you note detachedly. They huff and murmur something under their breath, but it goes entirely unnoticed amidst the ringing in your ears. You let your head fall against the wall behind you, the adrenaline from before beginning to fade. Against your will, your eyes fall shut and you fall unconscious.
There’s someone holding you in their arms, you realize as you’re roughly jostled awake. You can’t stop a pained hiss from slipping from your lips. You slowly blink your eyes open, unsurprised to find your vision to be swirling with colors and extremely blurry. You try to make out their facial features, but you’re slipping into unconsciousness before you can so much as see them clearly.
The next time you wake, you find yourself staring up at a green figure. You think that your eyes are playing tricks on you. After a minute of staring at him, however, the green color doesn’t go away. You flatten your back against the couch you’re reclined on, heart racing. Who is this guy? More importantly, is he even human? These questions must show on your face, because he sighs and explains that he's a mutant turtle. His explanation leaves you with even more questions than before, but you decide to forget about them for now.
“What’s your name?” you decide to ask instead. Clearly, the turtle isn’t expecting the question, because he sighs loudly and growls something under his breath. You continue to look at him unapologetically.
“You need to leave,” he eventually says. You blink at him in disbelief. Did he just tell you to go away? Wasn’t he the one who brought you here in the first place? Evidently, your distress must show on your face because he shakes his head. “You’re not supposed to be here.”
You stare at him, looking for any trace of humor in his expression. There is none. His lips are pulled taut and his arms are crossed over his chest. You decide to take the stranger’s advice and push yourself up off the couch. The movement is rather painful, but you don’t want to overstay your welcome. With that in mind, you stiffly get up to your feet and take a step towards the door. Unfortunately, your legs don't want to cooperate, and your knees buckle from under you. You close your eyes and brace for a collision with the ground when you’re suddenly tugged up.
“What are you doing?!” The turtle exclaims irritably. He has a firm grip on your forearm and he hauls you up with ease. Before you can argue, he leads you back to the couch.
“You told me to leave!” you manage to say, once you’ve regained your breath. The turtle looks at you in utter disbelief, before proceeding to facepalm. The gesture is rather cute, you have to admit. It definitely looks out of place, though, especially when considering his muscular figure and blank expression.
“Raphael.” You squint at the turtle, who is staring at you expectantly. Your gaze flits about his face as you look for answers. He must tire of this, because he takes a deep breath and continues. “My name.”
“Oh,” you say, eyelids already stinging from the exertion of staying awake. You introduce yourself in return, before falling back onto the couch cushions. Eventually, you just give up on trying to keep your eyes open. You fall asleep again within seconds.
“Raph, you healed a human?!” An exclamation sounds.
“You’ll wake him,” Raphael says, sounding annoyed.
“Psh, I don't care,” a third voice responds.
“You should!” someone else argues.
You jolt awake, only to find four turtles looking down at you. You blink once, twice. For a long moment, there's nothing but silence. Eventually, you manage to push yourself up to a sitting position. There’s a glass of water pushed into your hand, which you take with gratitude. Once your throat feels significantly less dry, you decide to ask what’s been playing on your mind.
“Raphael, are these your... brothers?” Raphael’s eyes widen inexplicably. He makes eye contact with you and grimaces, for some reason.
“You told him your name?” the one wearing purple asks, a strange expression on his face. It looks like a mix of surprise and knowing mischief. You don’t quite want to know what that look entails, so you turn your attention back to Raphael. Evidently, the turtle was expecting his brother’s reaction.
“Yeah.” Raphael scoffs. He then motions to the others to introduce themselves. You learn that Mikey is the goofy one that likes pizza—well, apparently they all like pizza, but whatever—and skateboarding. Leonardo is the eldest and he’s fiercely protective of his brothers, from what you can see. Lastly, there’s Donatello- the inventive turtle wearing purple. You introduce yourself to all of them in return. The turtles are fun personalities and pretty nice, which immediately makes you feel bad for making snap judgements about them.
“Okay, scram, guys,” Raphael says some time later, shooing them out of the room. You don't miss the knowing look from Leonardo or the wink from Donatello. Unfortunately, however, you don’t quite have the brainpower to contemplate what those expressions meant.
“Hey, can you help me get home?” you ask without embarrassment. Somehow, Raphael is the one that looks embarrassed at the prospect, as he scratches the back of his neck and looks askance.
“Sure,” he eventually shrugs, extending an open palm. You take his hand and the two of you walk out of the hideaway and onto the street. You’re unsurprised to find that it’s nighttime already. For a moment, you wonder how much time you spent asleep. That thought process turns depressing rather fast, so you elect to ignore it.
The two of you make it to the sidewalk near your apartment building within a few minutes. Once you’re standing before the steps near the side entrance—dimmer and with less light than the main entrance—you turn back to Raphael. “Hey, thanks,” you say. The turtle squints at you. “You know, for saving me.”
Raphael nods. For an awkward moment, the two of you stand there in complete silence. As if possessed, you quickly lean in and kiss him on the cheek, before turning to walk away. Your heart is positively racing as you move to take another step up the stairs.
“Wait.” You turn around, watching as Raphael looks up to the sky and mutters something under his breath before moving to sidle up next to you. “I’ll walk you to the door.” You take his help without question, gently gripping his forearm and using his support to get to the door. When you finally reach the doorstep, you have to fish for the key in your pockets.
“Well, thanks again,” you feel the need to say, once the door is unlocked. You have half a mind to hold the door open and let Raphael in, but he seems a little uncomfortable already. You abandon the notion and wave to him, before walking down the hall towards the elevator. Once you press the button and wait for the next elevator, you chance a glance back at where you came. To your surprise, Raphael is still standing on the other side of the door. He flinches upon making eye contact and quickly disappears. You turn back to the elevator, unable to get rid of the fond smile on your face.
