Y’all, when Rufus and Mateo are talking about the dead bird and it’s almost like they’re talking about Rufus’s death . . . that shit hurted
Last year on this day exactly at this time Mateo died. All in one day, he lived his full life. A full love story

Rylan danced and danced for hours upon hours everyday to get a spot in the school’s showcase. Rylan had to practice and practice or else that rotten musician Mateo would get the spot before him. He vowed everything that the dance program would have more people in the showcase than the music program. He sighed as the music turned off and he grabbed his towel.
Rylan wiped his face and sipped at his water bottle. He grimaced as he saw the infuriating musician sitting at the door waiting to get in. He grabbed his phone and walked out of the practice room. “The rooms all yours Matthew. Not like you are going to get the showcase anyway.”
God, reading TBDATE and watching Unus Annus come to an end at the same time has been such a trip.
I keep thinking about this quote from the video, “Accepting the Truth:” “We knew, and we were still in denial.” I keep thinking about how that has rung true throughout Unus Annus, how it rings true throughout TBDATE, how it rings true for all of us throughout life. We all know we’re going to die, but we can’t rap our heads around it. We disassociate from it or believe in afterlives or reincarnation. And I’m not saying either of those isn’t necessarily real (I believe in one myself), but we came up with those concepts for ourselves, not from any evidence.
But maybe we should come up with ways to believe that there is no true ending so we can live the life we have with less fear. Mark and Ethan know that they will still collaborate after Unus Annus is gone. Mateo and Rufus believe they’ll see their families and each other again, that they’ll have the time to live full lives in a different place and have years to say “i love you” instead of half an hour. It makes acceptance easier for them and, in the end, they seem to do more because of it. The fear is there, but it’s less paralyzing.
But we can live without these concepts. Especially for those who have experienced corruption and hate in organized religion, it can be more comforting to live a life without those expectations. Regardless, it can be more fulfilling to live life thinking it all ends completely.
In the end, I think the lesson we learn from books like They Both Die at the End and projects like Unus Annus is that acceptance comes from different things for everyone, but is necessary to live life with no regrets. So, however it happens for you, I hope you find the beliefs that will free you to live the life you have because, as much as it may suck a lot of the time, life really is beautiful.
The way someone tags a ship with a disputed/no ship name is really telling about who they are...
