Mhm you know what, I’m actually not ready to drop Blaine’s cheating, because not only does it not make sense (Again, this is Mr. “‘It’s not right, but it’s okay’ I should be the one making you smile like that” when Kurt is texting another dude). But I also don’t think cheating was the most emotionally impactful course.
Everyone on that show cheats. Everyone. Blaine and Kurt had also already been through that, because even though Kurt didn’t see the texting as cheating, Blaine did and it hurt him as such.
I think it would have been way better to play out the storyline of Blaine feeling forgotten and left behind and unloved without the cheating. For Blaine to go to New York and sing Teenage Dream as a desperate cry for Kurt to see him. For them to argue in the park, you can even have them break up, because they are not on the same page. Because Kurt has entirely overshadowed Blaine and left him behind, but he doesn’t see it that way.
I think, I think I think I think that emotionally it would have hit Kurt a lot harder when he finally realized that Blaine was right. Is it not more soul crushing to realize that you have been destroying the person you love most in the world, not on purpose, not noticing you were doing it at all, you were just so caught up in yourself you let them fall behind.
And then you would still have both of them in this place where they are sad, they’re hurt, they miss each other but they don’t know how to talk without the pain.
Blaine could still blame himself for the breakup, by feeling like he was too needy, too much, like if he had kept his mouth shut and just dealt with what he was feeling on his own instead of telling Kurt, they would still be together and Kurt wouldn’t be hurt and ignoring him.
Blaine would try everything to get Kurt back, because he still loved him. It was his fault they ended (in his mind), it was his duty to get him back even though Kurt didn’t feel like they were ready and was worried they would fall into the same trap again.
And you know what? I think Blaine going straight to the proposal makes More sense here, like a promise of forever could take away the insecurity he had felt the last time they were apart.
And then!! It leads perfectly into season 5, where Blaine continues to be insecure and worried about Kurt finding something better. And then it’s why he is so afraid to take up space, to tell Kurt that showcase was only for him, like he’s worried of making Kurt feel how he did or worse and their relationship ending as a result.
And then when Kurt ends the proposal, says he doesn’t really want this, that would be a full circle moment to their first breakup for Blaine.
And I just think it makes more sense for the show to have played out this way. Blaine never should have cheated, this is a hill I will die on. They could have had him consider it and not go through with it and I would have accepted that, but the cheating. It made no sense and it was not the best route for the character or the relationship and was such a cheap way to cause drama instead of focusing on the real issue.
