Not a bee at all. The >inch-long megabug, Sphex ichneumoneus, AKA the great golden digger wasp. An insect so big and colorful that even the least nature-inclined passerby gives notice. It looks big and bad but that's all a show. Like most of the world's 30,000 wasp species, it's pretty gentle unless handled roughly. When it's not sipping the nectar of sea holly (as in this photo) it's out collecting crickets, katydids, and grasshoppery things to provision their nests. Andrena prunorum - My favorite bee species in all the land, seen here visiting a carrot flower. They move about flowers with flared orange-veined wings, in much the same manner as many familiar wasps. Western leafcutter bee (Megachile periherta) visiting bull thistle (Cirsium vulgate). Hairy, chunky bees that are beastly in every way. In the 10 minutes it took to nab a photo of this fella he managed to pummel several bumblebees and even a yellowjacket out of his way. He made it clear that this thistle was his thistle and his alone. The new garden record holder for latest orchard mason bee! Well into summer and she's still hard at work capping off another nest. Her wings are in tatters, frayed at the edges. She doesn't have much time left, but she's made her mark. The previous record holder was June 20th.
