The Bee Hotel Has Occupants
The bee hotel I built last year
Last year I built a bee hotel in the hope of providing housing for some of our native bees. It looks like it worked because I can now see at least four little mud covered holes in the logs I placed in the hotel, which tells me I’ve got some mason bees in residence.

I’m not sure how to tell whether I have carpenter bees (the big black ones) hanging out because, other than knowing they nest by burrowing into rotting wood, I have no idea what I’m looking for. I did see a few buzzing about the hotel last fall, so I’m hoping that at least one or two found Le Hotel de Sage suitable.
Outside of the few solitary bees, the hotel is also home to plenty of spiders, a mud wasp, and various other wood and hole dwelling insects.
For info on how I built my hotel and the bees native to California, check out my post from last August.
Raspberry bee hotel (Osmia aglaia). Each nest is capped with finely chewed bits of plant leaves. However plant preference must be a personal matter to them as evidenced by the variety of materials used in this image. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~#masonbee #osmiaaglaia #beehotel #natgeoyourshot #mat_macro_bees https://www.instagram.com/p/BrVTMZSBfsD/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1orpiac8fca36
Upcycled Birdhouses or Bee/insect Hotel. I took some @davidriosf tins and #upcycled them into #birdhouses. Great activity to do for #Beltane tomorrow :) Items used: - tea/coffee/hot chocolate/chai/ etc tin - rope/ribbon/lace/etc - moss/lichen (the #moss and #lichen used in the making of these birdhouses was hand collected and process by me; and I only collect what it loose on the forest floor) - hot glue - hollowed out reeds/bamboo or rolled up paper/ toilet paper rolls is optional if you’d rather make bee hotels!!!!! - dark paint (optional) Steps: 1. Make sure the tin is cleaned out; 2a. Paint the tins (optional) 2b. Measure and fasten the rope, that you plan to use to hang the birdhouse (or whatever you e chosen to use), to the tin and tie a knot in the top; 3. Start to glue the lichen/moss to the tin with the hot glue; 4a. If you decide to make a bee hotel, this is where you would insert the hollowed out reeds/bamboo/rolled up paper/ toilet paper rolls into the opening of the tin; 4b. Find somewhere suitable to hang the birdhouses and hope that they get tenants. 🐦🐝🐞🕷 #insecthotel #beehotel #reuse #homemadebirdhouse #witch #naturewitch #greenwitch #eclecticwitch #witchesofinstagram #witchlife #witchythings #spooniewitch #raisingwitches #raisingwitchlings #witches #witchythings #witchyways #witchcraft #pagan #magic #magick #goodwitch #witchjewelry #witchtools #witchywares https://www.instagram.com/p/Bw5HHaFgErN/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=18vosrqewpoc9
Orchard mason bee. Where once there were thousands, this is the last to remain in my hotel. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~#osmialignaria #masonbee #beehotel
The bee bachelor pad. That’s what I call an old split log I drilled holes in years ago. It sits in a sheltered, shady location and strangely only attracts male leafcutter and mason bees. Every one of the forty or so holes is full now, but no nests will be made. It’s just a place the boys go to pass the nights. ~~~~<<<<<~~~~~~~~#megachile #leafcutterbees #beehotel #cutebees
