A scene from the anime Re:Zero that doesn’t end in the same way.
The walls rattled as Chuuya slammed the door shut.
“You’ve been acting off all week Dazai! Either you tell me what’s happening right now, or I’ll go figure it out myself!”
Dazai threw his arms around the redhead’s petite form as if to restrain him from leaving.
“NO!” The executive shouted before he could control himself.
“No..” He whispered in a broken voice. “Chuuya don’t go out. No. No. No. No. No. No.”
Amber eyes brimmed with insanity.
“YOU CAN’T DO ANYTHING ON YOUR OWN SO JUST STAY HERE AND BE SAFE.”
Shock crossed Chuuya’s face as Dazai’s composed self shattered from an unknown cause as well as the sudden statement that undermined his capabilities when the brunet was the one of the few people who knew just what he was capable of.
“IF YOU GO, NOTHING TURNS OUT RIGHT! WHY DON’T YOU UNDERSTAND CHUUYA.”
Dazai tightened his hold on the other’s arms.
“This is all for your sake. Why don’t you understand? Why. Why. Why. WHY?”
The brunet shook his head till Chuuya squirmed from his iron like grip and physically lifted his chin. Cerulean eyes stared at him as if trying to comprehend the sudden meltdown.
“Huh? What do you mean why. Don’t you understand this is all for-”
“Why are you crying like you’re in so much pain.”
The brunet sharply inhaled and finally noticed the tears freely flowing down his cheeks.
Images of Chuuya being brutally snatched away from him repeatedly flashed across his eyes while memories physical trauma inflicted onto his own body caused him to shudder in pain. He wanted to continue screaming to force the other to understand but grit his teeth and forced himself to relax.
“Do you really need to know,” he muttered out while dipping his head. “Can’t you just trust me.”
Sapphire eyes held their gaze wordlessly.
Trembling, Dazai loosened his hold and fixed his eyes on the shorter man’s face.
“Fine I’ll tell you everything so listen. You have to. Chuuya. You have to. I’m able to-”
His heart beat rapidly in his chest as the darkness took over. He could feel it. Those cold hands that toyed with the beating organ. Icy fingers that squeezed till blood spurt from his mouth and stained his clothes if he tried to mention a word to anyone at all.
Dazai shut his eyes and waited for the intense pain that always followed….
Only to have the hands trace out his heart and retract without sending him down another time loop.
He looked around the room in absolute confusion when Chuuya dropped against his chest.
Blood dripped down onto the floor and seeped through the white shirt.
Dazai slowly lifted his partner’s chin.
As limp as a rag doll, his partner’s head rolled back over his shoulders as crimson streaked down from his parted lips.
“Wha…Wait…No…No…No- AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH”
Clutching the bloodstained form, Dazai collapsed to his knees and screamed till he thought his lungs would burst.
Darkness slipped into the room as the sun set, and yet he remained in the same position. Still holding Chuuya’s body close, the executive dragged himself to a stray gun that had been misplaced.
He held the barrel against his head and buried his face into his partner’s hair.
Dazai barely managed to find his voice.
“This time.” Tears fell onto Chuuya’s pale face. “This time I swear I’ll save you.”
“I swear. I swear.” He repeated his promise like a broken record and pulled the trigger.
