I'm Jazz, a designer who writes fanfictions in my free time. My pseud is jazzaiko on AO3.
Here I'll be sharing my fics and writing woes (also moodboards, maybe?)! I love Kim Jongdae also known as Chen from the k-pop group EXO so much so I mostly write about him paired with other EXO members (and possibly other artists). I also write other fandoms like band LUCY, Doctor Strange, the Indonesian movie Mencuri Raden Saleh, Formula 1, and others.
I've been microwaving this for a bit, and this post made me realize I need to start compiling the evidence.
I'm only including things here where there's some kind of evidence of sustained attention or distraction. There are literally thousands of pictures that capture momentary glances and quick hugs where they look like their worlds have narrowed to a single point, and maybe they did for a split second, but at this point I think we have to accept that's just how they look at each other. What follows below are examples of when they seem to get just a little too caught up in that.
What follows is not exhaustive. It's just what I was able to dig up based on memory and a pretty thorough browse through the Landoscar tag.
So to start, this is the image from the post linked above. It's probably the most literal (and literary) illustration of how the two of them form their own little bubble, and the rest of reality just kind of moves around them.
The irony of the above picture is that while it's probably the most visually illustrative of the whole phenomenon as a concept, there are other images from this same celebration that are arguably far worse on the "we forgot other people were here" scale. Like this one. This only lasted a couple of seconds in real time, but bruh...it was like Andrea wasn't even there. The entire context of this was emotionally rough in real time, but the further I get from it, like, maybe one or both of them were mad, but definitely not at each other.
Ok, ok...moving on...
This isn't the first time I've posted about Landoscar in their own little world. (Though that post was more about how I characterized them in fiction, it really does apply in real life.) Ahead of the media day press conference in Abu Dhabi, you may recall this nonsense. Just a couple of alleged rivals sitting close together on a couch with plenty of room for personal space going about whatever the hell this is while ignoring about a dozen people capturing it in 4k and high-def audio.
Honestly, there were so many Landoscar In Their Bubble moments in Abu Dhabi this year. Just...go watch the press conference clips. Good grief, you two.
And then of course on the podium in Abu Dhabi, they both straight up bypass Max like he isn't even there.
You know what? It's basically any time they're on the podium together. I could probably make an entire post just with double podiums. It's so bad sometimes that some people on the internet have accused them of snubbing other drivers intentionally. They really don't...especially if it's someone's first podium or the person from their team accepting the constructor's award doesn't usually get that kind of recognition...but they really do seem like they like to celebrate together most of all.
Ok, so they tend to get a little lost in each other in celebration and in downtime. That's reasonably normal behavior. But it gets worse. They do this in press conferences, on live TV, on stage in front of thousands...
So to start with, there's this infamous moment in Barcelona in which they seem to forget they're in a room full of press and poor Charles is right there.
This is another example where they get a little too wrapped up in their mutual admiration or whatever and forget they're on live TV, and then they basically keep forgetting. (That whole interview is diabolical TBH)
And while we're on the topic of getting wrapped up in each other on live TV, this is not even a recent development! There's whatever this was in Bahrain in 2024...
...And this is them after Silverstone in 2023!
For good measure, here's them forgetting other people exist on a fan stage in front of thousands of people, which is one of many such instances.
I found another short moment here, which seems to be an outtake from a social media video that the admin was probably like, "You know what? Fuck it," and just posted their nonsense for the world to see. Probably figured we're used to it by now.
These two absolutely forgot what they were supposed to be doing here, and you can't convince me otherwise.
And God...just...this. It's like that cinematic moment when the two romantic leads eyes lock during the emotional climax of the film, and the sound drops away, and it's just them...and that's basically the theme of this whole post. Something about winning championships and these two, I guess.
I could probably keep going, but this post got long faster than I was expecting. I even left out loads of examples in various PR videos where they're also exceedingly fond and almost certainly have (at least momentarily) forgotten they're on camera. I might revisit that particular phenomenon later. I also didn't even begin to touch on their nonsense during the drivers parades. This might end up as a series. IDEK why I do this to myself.
Anyway, signing off with these because, even though they were small moments individually, I really feel like they add up and add to everything above.
what if we gazed fondly at each other while holding the most prestigious trophies in motorsport? 👉👈
some people think writers are so eloquent and good with words, but the reality is that we can sit there with our fingers on the keyboard going, “what’s the word for non-sunlight lighting? Like, fake lighting?” and for ten minutes, all our brain will supply is “unofficial”, and we know that’s not the right word, but it’s the only word we can come up with…until finally it’s like our face got smashed into a brick wall and we remember the word we want is “artificial”.
AI-generated fic in fandoms is so troubling and insidious. i've said it before and will say it again: generative AI should not be allowed to take root in fandom spaces, and especially not in one of the last hideouts for fandom creatives, which is here on tumblr and also on ao3.
maybe many of the new readers reading fic in the tags now i assume are young and excited to surround themselves with universes and stories. and if you're reading this, i want you to extend the same courtesy and good faith to you that elder internet forum folks had extended to me, so that i had time to digest and understand–
please understand that writing fanfic and creating any fanwork is something we do out of passion, care, and necessity. making things takes time. executing creative ideas takes time. it requires an extraordinary level of energy. creative work is the process.
it’s not something that is typically done in hours, even days. and it's often something people are doing outside of other commitments and pressures. it is, first and foremost, a labour of love.
fanfic is not written by a machine that endlessly reflects and echoes people's work until it is unrecognisable anymore. fanfic is written by people who are dreaming and have an idea they want to sketch out. or just because they want to enjoy something with no guilt in this late capitalistic hellscape.
because fandom is one of the last online third spaces we have left.
i don't know how many more times i have to explain that the companies behind genAI do not have your best interests at heart. profit is their motive. reducing the value of art in the world for the sake of "efficiency" is their motive. because they do not care. they do not believe art needs a heart. they do not believe art needs YOUR heart, or rather they are happy to take the work that comes from your heart and use it to feed their bottom lines. companies like this crawl the works of millions of others (including ao3 recently btw, unauthorised), and use the works of those who bothered to do it the hard way first, only to spit a strange, reanimated, soulless thing out of it.
they believe art can be flattened and endlessly regurgitated. they believe originality can be replicated and that they can cut human impulse and joy out of the equation.
do not feed into this.
do not use gen AI to write fics.
do not support people that do so, and give them any legitimacy.
because joy is what fandom is about.
fandom was born out of a desire to imagine beyond, to colour outside the lines, and by nature is meant to be a space for people to cultivate enjoyment.
you do not cultivate enjoyment by getting a machine to write the story for you and by sublimating your desire to the machine.
you get community by sharing the thing you love with people and ideating it with people and staring endlessly at your blinking cursor sometimes even if it hurts, even if it feels like pulling teeth with dental floss, and even if it takes you 100000x longer – because trust me, people will respect you and your writing far more. because you tried. because IT IS YOURS.
writing (or any form of making) is a distillation of something only you can say to the world in your own way. and yes fanfic is a legitimate expression of such work, because otherwise why would so many people have been moved by the stories or art and talked about them and remembered them?
and if you really don't see a fic out there that fits what you want - then maybe it's time that you tried to tell it for yourself. you're capable. you have something you want to say. you have the capacity to imagine.
so do what writers have done for centuries: believe.
Agreeing with everything said here! And sorry to take your beautiful post and adding my own thoughts, but i don't know where else to put them.
Some people might see this and become defensive. "But I only use AI for editing my fics! I would never use it to let it write things for me" or "I'm just brainstorming with it and then taking those fic ideas and making them my own!"
Sure, you can use it as a shortcut for certain things. Brainstorming. Starting projects. Searching for possible ideas and then going from there. Letting AI go through grammar and style for you. But if you do this, you do not learn anything while using it.
You do not learn how to sort your thoughts and find things you think are interesting. You do not learn what you like to write and what you don't, what pairings you love, what tropes you enjoy and which ones you absolutely loathe. You do not learn to be a part of a community of writers who are eager to help each other, do not learn how to make friends and ramble into each other's dms about whether a sentence would flow better like this or like that. You do not learn anything about the quirks of the language you are writing in and you do not improve your language skills. You do not learn to develop a voice that is uniquely yours.
You slowly lose your ability to think for yourself and start projects for yourself without going "oh, i better ask AI what the best way to do this is". And it's a slippery slope from going "oh, i'll only use it for xyz" to "oh, i need chatgpt to look that over because i don't think it's good enough" every time you do something even slightly difficult.
The things is, I've used chatgpt before. Right as it became big, before i knew how exactly it worked and what the training data really is. Used it "just for brainstorming" university assignments that were too tedious to start.
And soon i thought "why not use it for whole arguments of a boring essay? Just one paragraph to get me going." Or "just the summary, i've already written everything myself and don't care to sum it up". Or "Just that simple code snippet, it's the same as copying it from a website somewhere." But as soon as i started thinking like this, i was so, so, so horrified. Like ... i was able to do the exact same things before. Why was it that i now wanted to turn to AI every time i did something?
I was angry at myself for letting it get this far and never touched AI again. Because it hinders your ability to think. And do things in way only you can. And not using it again felt so bad, but i had to push through and i am so glad i went through all this BEFORE it became so socially acceptable to use it. And before i went into fic writing.
Because ... using it is so easy. When the "do everything without thinking and get so much dopamine even if you did nothing" button is literally right there. Even if you "only use it for editing", resisting the temptation to go further than just editing is often immensly difficult.
As wiz said, Gen AI companies WANT you to use it. They WANT you to be unable to make those easy choices at the start of projects so you rely on their product more and more. Do not let them win.
Why do you let yourself be robbed of the joy of figuring things out for yourself? Why do you let yourself be robbed of the joy of creating something and sharing it with people because you love the thing you created? Because all this will make you feel happier than you could ever be from letting gen AI do everything for you and then seeing the hits and kudos go up, knowing that what you've posted isn't truly your voice after all.
And even if you're "only editing" with Gen Ai: Why do you use the thing that enables you to go down a path that only harms you in the long run?
The thing is, fics and art don't have to be perfect in the first place. And if you think "well those other fics don't have to be but mine does", then fandom can be there for you in every step of the process. Friends cheering you on, letting you know that your art is beautiful as it is. Betas making sure you are on track. Hell, spam-like a person's posts you enjoy and see yourself probably becoming mutuals with them and get talking.
If you're anxious and don't want to talk to people, I get it, I truly do. Still, there are plenty of other ways you can improve that aren't gen AI. Look at prompt memes for brainstorming. Use spell- and grammar checkers that do not feed off of your inability to think and do and create.
Like ... even if you do not care about the ethics of gen AI stealing other people's works without their consent and regurgitating them into something without a heart and a soul, the slow loss of fandom culture, the terrible environmental impact, and everything so many people like wiz have said better than i ever could.
Even if you only care about yourself and no one else: Using Ai will not help you. It never will.
i would also add here, on a more personal basis– it is really deflating and sad to see the infiltration of gen AI crap in our fandom spaces, because i knew this was going to be inevitable, but i honestly believed that people knew better and would DO BETTER than that in a community that was founded on being anti-establishment, communal, and transformative in its creative practices.
if you use AI to write or rewrite your fics you are not transforming anything. you're just terraforming words and worlds and producing astroturf that nobody even enjoys playing on or asked for in the first place.
Sometimes we’re unsatisfied with a thing we made because when it only existed in our head, we saw all the things it could have been and when it’s done we know all the things that it isn’t, but we can’t see the way it expands into a million new things when someone else unpacks it in their head.

Despite all Lando's efforts, things just keep getting worse for him at the Dutch Grand Prix. Bad luck after bad luck.
Is it even worth fighting anymore?

I crashed out after Zandvoort, so I wrote this to cope. Sending hugs to all 481s out there
