“K?” you peered into the technician’s hall of the Rebel base, scanning the various droids that were rolling around. You had not seen K-2 all day, and you were concerned. You suddenly caught sight of the droid ducking into another room, and you rushed after him. You pulled open the door of the supply closet, to see K-2 standing awkwardly inside.
“Hello, y/n.” he said uncertainly, and you pressed your lips together to stop yourself from laughing.
“What are you doing, K?” you asked, giggling slightly. K-2 straightened, and try to walk past you.
“I was just leaving.” he responded flatly, and your laugh faded. K-2 had been avoiding you lately, and you didn’t understand why.
“Why are you always pushing me away?” you asked, reaching out to K-2. He pulled his arm away, not looking at you.
“I am a droid, y/n.” his voice seemed abnormally emotionless, and not in his usual sarcastic tone. “You don’t need to spend so much time with me. You deserve so much better.”
“Oh, K.” you tilted your head. “But I like spending time with you! Don’t you like hanging out with me?”
“I do, y/n, but why don’t you spend more time with… well, people?” he asked.
“Well I don’t want to leave you out, do I?” you pointed out, but K-2 seemed unconvinced.
“You don’t need to worry about me.” he said, trying to move away. Refusing to let him leave, you stood in front of him.
“K.” your voice became serious. “I think you’re just afraid to be happy. You don’t need to be scared or insecure to hang out with the people who make you happy.”
“Do you truly mean that?” K-2 asked, and you could hear some more hope and emotion enter his voice. You nodded firmly, and K-2 brightened up. “Thank you, y/n.”
“No problem, K.” you grinned, then straightened your shirt. “Now, do you want to go prank Cassian with me?”

“Maybe you should shut up, Cassian, instead of making the situation worse.”
Sniggering, you covered your face with the clipboard you were holding as you heard K-2 talking to Cassian. K-2 looked up momentarily and saw you, but you quickly hid your smile and focused on your task.
“y/n agrees with me.” K-2 had already heard you laughing, and Cassian shot you a look. You quickly through your hands up defensively.
“I just thought it was funny, that’s all!” you squealed, and you watched as Cassian and K-2 went back to arguing. You leaned on the table and smiled to yourself, laughing at K-2’s comments. You stopped yourself at one point, and sighed.
You knew it was ridiculous, but you had a silly crush on K-2. He was such a funny droid, and you knew if he was a person you’d definitely be even more attracted to him. But that was the thing: he was a droid. You couldn’t go around telling people you were in love with a droid, people would probably look down on you.
Shaking your head, you rushed out of the room. You were one of the people who helped reprogram K-2, so you had been with him since the beginning. He was always making you laugh and was always protecting you on missions. You knew that was just his function as a droid, but he made you really happy.
You made your way into the room and flopped onto you bed, groaning loudly into you pillow.
“Why is this so complicated!” you exclaimed, not noticing you forgot to close the door. Jyn walked passed and saw you face down into your bed, and chuckled.
“Everything alright, y/n?” she asked, pausing in the doorway. You shot up, taken by surprise, then ran your hands through your hair.
“Yeah, fine. Just unrequited love.” you responded abruptly and dramatically. Jyn paused, but decided not to pry. Nodding, she slowly back out of the room and continued on her way, leaving you to go back face down into your bed and scream into your pillow.
—
You were just putting your tray away in the cafeteria when K-2 and Cassian entered. On any other day, you would've joined them for lunch, but something in your stomach lurched when you saw K-2. You had been trying to distance yourself from him lately, hoping that would suppress your feelings. You looked around frantically, and sprinted out of the hall.
“Why does y/n run away from me nowadays?” K-2 had already seen you, and Cassian shrugged as he grabbed a bowl of food. “Am I too annoying?”
“You’re always annoying, K.” Cassian retorted. “I’m sure it’s nothing, why are you worried about it anyway?”
“She’s been spending 43.89% less time with me than usual.” K-2 responded as Jyn joined them in the line. “That’s quite a lot.”
“I don’t blame them.” Jyn said casually, hearing the last bit of the conversation and Cassian chuckled. “Who are we talking about?”
“y/n.” Cassian informed her, and she looked up in surprise. She didn’t respond for a moment, suddenly piecing everything together.
“Save my food for me.” she shoved her tray towards Cassian and sprinted to your room. Sure enough, you were groaning into your pillow again.
“Go away.” you mumbled, hearing someone enter your room. Jyn sat down next to you, and you looked up.
“What’s up between you and K-2?” she asked, and you froze. “Don’t tell me this is the unrequited love you were talking about earlier.”
“I knew someone would judge me!” you exclaimed, and Jyn laughed and shook her head.
“Oh, y/n, you’re making a bigger deal out of this than necessary.” she shook your shoulders. “It’s weird, but it’s fine. I mean I personally don’t see what you like about K-2, but I mean there are stranger things in our galaxy.”
“But he’s a droid, Jyn!” you rolled your eyes. “How is that supposed to work?”
“No idea. Why don’t you asked him? He says you’ve been spending a lot less time with him recently.”
“He’s noticed?” your head shot up, and she nodded. As if on cue, the door opened and K-2 was standing in your doorway.
“Oh thank goodness.” K-2 said, stepping in. “I worried you might be dead or something.”
“She has a crush on you!” Jyn burst out before you could stop her.
“Jyn!” you cried out, embarrassed.
“Oh.” was all K-2 managed to get out. He looked around, checking that Jyn wasn’t referring to anyone else, and then looked back at you. “I’m flattered, y/n.”
“Oh, god.” you covered your flushed cheeks with your pillow, but you and Jyn were laughing hysterically. “This is the silliest situation I’ve ever been in!”
“I always envisioned I would end up being with another droid, not a human.” K-2 continued, and Jyn clutched her stomach from laughter.
“You two would make a very cute couple.” she laughed, wiping away her tears. You managed to get to your feet, still laughing, and ran up next to K-2 to pose for Jyn. Jyn laughed again, falling back onto your bed.
“I would hug you, but…” K-2 spoke, unsure of why the two of you were in hysterics. He gestured to his mechanical body, but you ignored him and threw you arms around him.
“Thanks for being such a great droid, K-2.” you looked up and grinned at him, before dissolving into giggles again. K-2 watched as you jumped into the bed next to Jyn, who had just managed to recover from laughing.
If K-2 could smile, he would’ve smiled at you too.

Cassian watched as you and K-2 snuck out of the weapons room and sprinted down the hall. Confused, he stopped the Rebel soldier he was talking to.
“Did you see that?” Cassian asked, and the soldier looked behind him, but the two of you were already gone. The soldier shook his head, and Cassian waved his hand in dismissal.
“Never mind, continue.” the soldier continued his briefing, but Cassian kept an eye on where he had just seen you and the droid.
—
A few hours later, the three of you were sitting in the cafeteria. Starving, Cassian was hungrily eating his food, whereas you had barely touched yours. K-2 sat opposite the two of you, watching you eat. You stole glances at the droid, who was unaware of your looks. At one point, Cassian caught you.
“Something wrong, y/n?”
“What? Oh, no! Not at all!” you said a little too quickly.
“I find that answer very unconvincing.” K-2 looked at Cassian, and underneath the table you kicked the droid, which Cassian heard but chose to ignore.
“Oh yeah,” Cassian remembered earlier that day. “What were the two of you doing earlier-”
“K!” you exclaimed, standing up suddenly. “We had to go check on some ships for Bodhi, remember?”
“No, I don’t remember.” K-2 had begun to protest but you grabbed the droid’s arm and slowly tried to drag him away. Cassian remained in his seat, food still in his mouth, as you rushed the droid away.
—
You were now standing next to K-2, watching Chirrut who was teaching Jyn more techniques on how to fight. Baze was watching from nearby, and Cassian and joined the group. He noticed you tense up, and steal a glance at K-2, who watched Jyn unimpressed.
“I don’t see why everyone thinks she's such a great fighter.” K-2 commented. “Look at her, y/n, this is honestly not that interesting.”
“Care to give it a shot, then?” Jyn challenged, glaring at K-2, who had stepped forward before Cassian rushed in between them.
“No, he will not be giving it a shot.” Cassian interrupted, pushing K-2 back and giving Jyn a look. He turned around to see you staring intently at K-2, only to look away when you noticed Cassian was looking at you.
“Let’s go watch something else, K.” you suggested instantly.
“I’d rather watch Jyn get punched in the face.” K-2 responded, but you were already tugging at his arm again.
—
“Okay, I can’t take it anymore.” Cassian slammed his fists on the table. “Why do you keep staring at my droid?”
The three of you were sitting in the cafeteria again, eating dinner. The hall was mainly empty by now, most people filing away to their rooms or attending last minute errands.
“I’m not staring at K-2.” you tried to protest, but Cassian spoke over you.
“And why do you keep sneaking around with him?!”
“I don’t sneak around with him!”
“What, are you in love with him or something?” Cassian stared at you. You burst out laughing, and then realised his serious expression.
“Cassian,” you raised your eyebrows. “He’s a droid.”
“Well,” K-2 piped up. “I am a good looking droid.”
“By who’s standards?” you retorted.
“I don’t mind if you admit you’re in love with me, y/n.” K-2 continued. “Although it would be very weird-”
“What is going on?” Cassian yelled, and you and K-2 looked at each other uncertainly.
“Nothing!” you exclaimed, and Cassian shook his head.
“Just tell me!”
“Well, just for the record, I have no idea what y/n is trying to hide.” K-2 quickly stated, and you flushed.
“I… um… I…” you stammered, and looked to the floor. “I said your haircut was stupid, alright!” you quickly said. Cassian looked at you, thrown off guard.
“This is all about something you said about my hair?” Cassian responded, incredulous.
“I didn’t mean it!” you quickly tried to cover up. “I was just really frustrated and I was really annoyed by everyone, and I just slipped out-”
“Oh, I remember now.” K-2 spoke. “You said it was weird because it was kind of long, yet kind of short. And the way it hung over his forehead sometimes looks like a spider’s legs or something.”
“Thank you, K, but I didn’t need the details.” Cassian cut him off sharply.
“I swear I didn’t mean it!” you kept apologising. “But I said it in front of K-2 and I didn’t want him to repeat it in front of you, because I didn’t want you to get mad at me, so I made him swear he’d keep it a secret but I didn’t trust him to!”
“Hey!” K-2 looked at you. “Believe it or not, I can keep a secret.”
“Yeah, only because you forgot about it!” you pointed out.
“So all this time,” Cassian confirmed, still baffled by the whole thing. “All this sneaking around and staring, is because you insulted my hair and you didn't want K to tell me about it?”
Guiltily, you nodded. Cassian looked between you and the droid, and rolled his eyes.

“Are you really not even going to at least pretend like you’re ready for a fight?”
“Shut up, K-2!”
He was right, though, and you reached for your blaster. You were too busy skipping alongside the droid — repeating “I told you so!” — that you had forgotten there was a fight of some sort going on. You adopted a defensive pose, and started moving closer to where you had heard the explosion. Your could hear the sounds of blasters becoming louder, and as you came around the building you came arrived at the heart of the fight.
There was an abandoned tank in the middle of the road and stormtroopers were firing everywhere. You could see snipers hiding on the roofs, and extremist rebels were firing back. You aimed your blaster and fired at a few stormtroopers, and you could hear K-2 behind you knocking some down, but the droid suddenly grabbed your bag again.
“We’re not here to fight, y/n.” K-2 nimbly caught a grenade and threw it over your shoulder without even flinching. “We’re here to find Cassian and Jyn.” His last few words were drowned out by the sound of an explosion, but you nodded in response. Turning back to fire one last time, you followed the droid down a street. You looked up and saw a squad of stormtroopers running at you. Instinctively, you raised your blaster and fired at the first one.
“y/n, no!” K-2 exclaimed, and you froze in your spot as the stormtrooper fell and the rest of the squad turned to stare at you.
“What a good plan, y/n.” K-2 remarked sarcastically. “Shoot the stormtroopers even though they weren’t firing at you. I applaud your initiative.”
“God, K-2, do you ever just shut up-”
“Why isn’t the prisoner in handcuffs? Why does she still have her blaster?” a stormtrooper approached K-2, and you suddenly realised what was going on. The stormtroopers would’ve passed you without any problem if you hadn’t shot at them; they had assumed you were a prisoner.
But now you were in trouble. You knew K-2 couldn’t lie his way out of this one.
“I’m not a prisoner.” you responded, before smacking your blaster across the stormtrooper’s head and firing at the remaining ones. K-2 picked the gun of the ground and began firing next to you. One of the stormtroopers suddenly shot your gun, knocking it out of your hands.
“Blast!” you exclaimed, and gasped as you narrowly dodged a blaster aimed at your head. “K-2, we have to run!” you ducked behind a small crate, and K-2 nodded.
“Finally! Something we can agree on.” you were just about to take off when you heard blasters coming from the right. You looked up to see Cassian firing at the stormtroopers while Jyn knocked some down with her gun.
“y/n! K! What are you doing here?” Cassian demanded after the stormtroopers were all on the floor.
“K-2 told me you thought it was a bad idea if I came along.” you retorted angrily, and Cassian groaned.
“K!” he yelled. “That’s not what I told you!”
“Well that’s how I interpreted the situation.” K-2 responded, and you looked at Cassian.
“What did you tell him?” your anger was fading, replaced with confusion.
“I told him to keep you in the ship because I didn’t want you to get hurt.” Cassian replied, still glaring at the droid.
“It was a bad idea that y/n came along, She almost got herself killed. She almost got me killed!” K-2 continued. You head was spinning. Cassian didn’t want you to get hurt?
“What’s going on?” your voice raised about the confusion. Jyn stood a little distance away, smirking as she placed her blasted back in her holder.
“I didn’t want you to leave the ship because I didn’t want you to get hurt, and I wouldn’t forgive myself if you did because I like you a lot, alright y/n?!” Cassian yelled frustratedly.
“What? So you’ll only take people you hate along-” you gestured wildly to Jyn, and she rolled her eyes.
“No, y/n,” K-2 interrupted, annoyed. “He means ‘like’ as in he’s in love with you. Why didn't I see it before?”
“Oh.” your voice trailed off, and you lowered your arms. You felt blood rising to your cheeks. “Oh my god. Oh my god!” Cassian averted your gaze and put his blaster back in his belt. Jyn burst out laughing, which Cassian responded with a sharp look which she ignored.
“Well, unless you’re going to kiss now, let’s keep moving.” she readjusted her scarf and began moving away.
“Go back to the ship, K.” Cassian ordered, still not looking at you. K-2 moved to protest, but Cassian shot him a look. Begrudgingly, K-2 turned and began walking away.
“So, uh…” you looked at your feet. “Should I go with K-2, or…?”
“Since you seem so determined to break my orders, you’re better off staying with me.” Cassian replied. You looked up to apologise, but you realised he was smiling. Gesturing for you to walk with him, you smiled back and leaned to whisper in his ear.
