Nothing hurts more as a fan than a piece of media that you love getting a remake or revision and all the parts that you loved about it suddenly get retconned and genuinely made so much worse, while your favourite characters suddenly do things that feel incredibly OOC and make no sense at all.
tl;dr the laptop seems to have rebooted overnight (??) and lost all the pinned stuff, all bookmarks, my keyboard setting, etc. wtf
(computer works fine now but if I can have an inkling what happened it’d be nice. cause now I don’t trust this machine at all and I’m this close to putting a hammer to it)
It’s a laptop. It had a one-year Microsoft Office subscription thing on it. Now it’s over, but it WANTS to stay connected (there’s an email and password thing). I don’t bother, so I don’t know if it’s connected. The laptop was at my parents’ for a while doing nothing except getting its updates.
When I finish at night I just close the top, the laptop goes to sleep. Did that for a few days without a hitch.
Overnight, I don’t know what it did (reboot? install stuff? what?) But I got a message that OneDrive was not connected. Like I care.
But I had lost everything. Opera that I downloaded yesterday? Gone. All bookmarks in browsers? Gone. Office suite? Where is it??? All pinned programs on the bar at the bottom? Unpinned. Microsoft Edge has the new logo. The keyboard I need (a specific French one), gone. My browsers were closed as if I didn’t have a few tabs opened (that I lost) - it didn’t do the “restore?” thing. It just... nothing. I lost the tabs and the stuff I was logged in.
I reconnect to OneDrive (because what the fuck and why not) no it was not OneDrive, it was Microsoft Office. WordStarter2010 suddenly works. (although I hadn’t tried before logging back in). My keyboards reappear. Not bookmarks, not pinned stuff (had to repin) and if I want to open Opera it asks me if I want to open it with Edge, Firefox, etc. ???? Do I even have Opera? Mystery...
Enough reboots of the popular old shows. Reboot the unpopular old shows. Give it another chance. If the new one sucks as much as the old, at least it fits in, but there's a chance it could be good this time.
OR... maybe the old show wasn't unpopular because it sucked. Maybe it was ahead of its time. Maybe it was overshadowed by The Major Fandom Thing. Maybe the corporate executives screwed it over for stupid reasons. Maybe it deserves a second chance.
Back when Cartoon Network argued that they couldn't make Tom Warburton's Galactic Kids Next Door spinoff idea happen because some shows must come to an end....then proceeded to reboot Power Puff Girls without consulting any of the original writers, cast, or Craig McCracken himself.
When you have to block every tag associated with a reboot just to stop seeing a reboot version of a character whom you like the original version, and dislike the reboot version because they completely changed everything about them.
Now, not for the reason you probably first thought. My gripe comes from the old fans. Those who refuse to accept that the hard, let's start from the beginning reboot isn't exactly like the original. Those who will complain about every little thing. Those who once stated that there were flaws in the original suddenly act like those flaws never existed and the original was the best thing ever. Those who will watch the reboot and then hiss and snarl about every conceivable thing. Those who don't exactly attack new fans but will constantly post about how terrible the new reboot is and how no one should like this 'garbage'.
You know the exact type of fan I'm talking about.
Like, I get it. It's extremely hard watching that thing you adored during childhood be turned into a new cash-grab. God, there are countless examples of this. I'm not talking about that specifically, however. I'm talking about the behavior of the older fans and fandoms.
I know you don't want to hear this - reboots aren't meant for old fans. They're for pulling in a new generation of fans. Yes, majority are cash grabs or to sell toys. Making shows specifically to sell new dolls or toys isn't a new thing, though.
Maybe instead of shitting all over the thing the newer generation takes interest in, guide them toward the original? Constantly shouting that the new reboot is awful and garbage, and whatever other insult you can find doesn't help in the slightest. The new fans will take a look at your posts and decide to stay away from that toxic fandom.
Stop attacking new fans. You're allowed to outright despise the reboot, but others are also allowed to like the thing, and they should be allowed to make content for that thing without having to deal with frustrated old fans. A hard pill to swallow for some, I know.
I am a hardcore fan of Panty and Stocking, and I am absolutely disappointed with New Panty and Stocking. It has almost none of the transgression or action of the OG season one. I dropped it after six episodes. I certainly don't appreciate the new English dub either. It feels like it's gone soft and sensitive so it can be more appealing when it never needed to in the first place. I've already encountered a dozen fake fans who were only interested because the characters looked cute while bashing on everything else. I care about everything that goes on in this show, and I don't appreciate these people.
(TW: SA mention and incest mention): As much as I want some obscure media to get the remake treatment, I don’t want it. Not because I’m pessimistic towards remakes, in fact, my favorite game is the Resident Evil 4 Remake.
It’s because of how sensitive people are nowadays and lack media literacy. Haunting Ground, for instance. I WISH that this game was not a PS2 exclusive and I wish Capcom did not decide to be stupid and release it at the same time as the original RE4, because the latter would get more attention than the other because Resident Evil is mainstream at this point. That aside, Haunting Ground should not get a remake because people will be unable to handle the themes of that game.
People will say that the game glorifies SA and incest when it does not. It portrays the antagonist and the enemies as creeps. It even depicts the only female enemy Daniella as a creep for undressing Fiona with her eyes and touching her without her consent. Fiona’s uncle is every single type of creepy and wants to get her pregnant because of the most depraved reasons.
The game is supposed to put you in the shoes of a vulnerable person and show you the perspective of how scary it is for young women to be preyed on. That is where the horror part of the survival horror comes into play.
I do not want this to be remade not because of the elements of this horror game, but because people will misinterpret this game as a “disgusting, rape and incest fetish game” when it is clearly not. It’s a SURVIVAL HORROR game.
