With the benefit of several years, I've started thinking about what would happen if Simeon got to meet Abies.
They're both knight-coded, but have completely different circumstances. Overall I think Simeon is an underdog, driven to succeed even with all odds stacked against him. He lives as a fugitive, doing what he has to so he can survive. In Recusant, he goes to Sussui because its shaping up to be such an impending powderkeg that the Time Police won't get near enough to chase him down.
In a way, Abies has "made it". He gets a statue in a garden. A plain statue, but he's there with the rest of the Highchair. I'm pretty sure LOCAA is a meritocracy, because the Highchair selects from the best trainees. He was awesome enough to get into a leadership position. People speak highly of Abies.
Abies has what Simeon wants but doesn't have. At the same time, I don't think Simeon can even recognize that they had such different starting conditions. He can only see another perfect sword-wielding hero to follow in the footsteps of. We don't know enough about Abies. Was he actually as great as he's said to be? I wonder if Simeon actually had Abies' life, would he still turn out the exact same way? I don't know enough, but I still wonder.
