A scrambling shrub or liana Combretum falcatum is a native of Angola, Burundi, Congo, Gabon and Zaire. This tropical species needs a warm, humid glasshouse to thrive in the U.K. where it produces small white flowers with spectacular red bracts.

The red bracts on the flowering stem of Racinaea dyeriana (Tillandsia dyeriana) each have a small white flower that only lasts a few hours and then darkens. This air plant is an endemic of Ecuador and grows in mangrove forests where it is critically endangered due to habitat lost.

For some late spring or early summer drama you could grow the hardy Mexican, clump-forming evergreen perennial Beschorneria yuccoides (yucca-leaved beschorneria). This plant forms a large rosette of grey-green leaves and from these emerge large flower stalks with conspicuous red bracts housing yellow-green tubular flowers. The ideal growing conditions are a sunny site with a well-drained soil.
