For some late spring or early summer drama you could grow the hardy Mexican, clump-forming evergreen perennial Beschorneria yuccoides (yucca-leaved beschorneria). This plant forms a large rosette of grey-green leaves and from these emerge large flower stalks with conspicuous red bracts housing yellow-green tubular flowers. The ideal growing conditions are a sunny site with a well-drained soil.

A dramatic addition to the newly planted heather beds at the Royal Horticultural Society Garden Wisley, Surrey, is Yucca rostrata (beaked yucca, tree yucca) which adds an architectural effect. It is interesting how the specimens are scattered through the beds and form a colony in the pathway. This Northern Mexico and Southern USA species is a tree yucca growing up to 3.5m high, with one or more woody stems. The flower stalk can reach up to 1.5m with white flowers in the late summer or autumn. Once the heathers grow the Yucca will provide repetition of form through the mounds of fine texture and colour provided by Erica and Calluna species. Some beehives and a large sculpture of honeycomb have also been added to this reimagined part of the garden.

At Provender Nursery, Kent, UK, the Dicksonia antarctica (soft tree fern) were coming into leaf after their importation from Australia. It is vital to ensure plants are legally harvested and exported by checking they have an environmental tag with a serial number. This is an evergreen tree fern, but becomes deciduous in colder areas. The erect, trunk-like rhizome is clothed in fibrous roots so in hot, dry summers water the stem but avoid allowing water in the crown of the plant in winter.

The Mahonia × media 'Winter Sun' (Oregon grape) has started to flower and later in the autumn and early winter will fill the air with fragrance. This medium-sized evergreen shrub has an upright growth, with long, spiny, pinnate leaves. It is a hybrid resulting from a cross between Mahonia lomariifolia and Mahonia japonica. It can create a striking architectural plant when the lower branches are removed to reveal the stems.
