If you’re ever having A Time Of It And Have Had Enough, I highly recommend watching Steve Marsh’s travel videos on YouTube.

This lovely Scotsman explores not only Scotland, but also nearby countries and islands, via plane and train and bus and ferry, and quite often on foot, with easygoing curiosity, humor, and wonder.

His videos are full of long, indulgent segments in which the camera lingers on a scene and lets you enjoy it — no quick cuts here, and no Insta-TikTok-Etc effects — and he tries to include ambient sounds wherever possible to give a feeling of place.

He has a Patreon, so his newer videos don’t have commercials, and even the older ones that do aren’t crazy with ads.

It was early October and I happened to stroll through art supplies aisles in a store, just because I had extra time before my bus. On a whim, I bought cheap watercolours, the kind you buy for primary school kids, and the smallest paper block.

So watercolours is my new hobby now.

Behold the chronicle of how it went this past month:

First, I watched a couple of YT videos and did basic drills.

2. Then I played around and discovered that watercolour painting is a lot about taking breaks even though you don't want to stop so that things could dry.

3. After that I tried an easy landscape tutorial and started to suspect that the brush sold as a set with the paints might not be great.

4. I fooled around with a few basic techniques making things up as I went and confirmed that the brush sold as a set with the paints is trash.

5. Having realized my brush can't really do details (but deciding to stick to it until my next paycheck), I wisely decided to just play with colours. It was fun.

6. I had more fun with colours and discovered that (a) while watercolour painting is indeed a lot of tedious waiting for things to dry (see 2.), it's equal parts race with things drying, and (b) shading is tricky.

7. Finally, just before buying new brushes, I did basic drills again. Dry-on-wet & glazing vs. wet-on-wet & bleeding.

Perhaps I'll keep sharing my progress, we'll see. I'm not exactly aiming to perfect a craft and get results, it's more about a meditative and relaxing aspect of it. I need something like that after work.

Okay, sometimes you just have to get crafty with empty toilet paper rolls and make something kinda ugly that will hopefully look halfway decent after a coat of glittery golden spray paint.
