*BASS-BOOSTED AIR HORN VERSION OF THE CONNECTED THEME PLAYS*
UNDER THE RADAR from Relay FM - Marco Arment and David Smith, both one man app developers talk through the ins and outs of making your living through the App Store.
RECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES from Relay FM - Merlin Mann in a weekly conversation with John Siracusa. There is an intricate web implied here and this node connects Accidental Tech Podcast with Roderick on the Line. The tangents are interesting, and this pod illustrates how situational most personalities are. For deep podcast nerds, if they're intrigued.
PRESENTABLE from Relay FM
MAC POWER USERS from Relay FM - David Sparks and Katie Floyd host a low-key and idiosyncratic podcast that aims to make you a more efficient Mac user.
Myke is sick, Grey hits two million YouTube subscribers, and they are both very upset about Apple Pencil support in iOS 9.3.
You should listen to this.
I think from about 26ish minutes in to about 1:20ish minutes in, Grey and Myke talk about YouTube.
Highlights:
-Myke is confused by YouTube numbers. Why do some channels have millions of subscribers and only thousands of views while some have millions of views? (Grey has ~2 mil subs and gets about ~1 mil views a video)
-Grey thinks that YouTube shows like 1% or something of a channel’s subscribers a video and sees how many people watch it and for how long. Then they expand it out to a larger group and try to determine if it is worth showing that creators content.
-If you subscribe to a podcast, you get the podcast. Why isn’t this how YouTube works?
-Grey talks about how he made 2 videos in 40 minutes that received about 2 mil views combine. This the most money per hour of work that he will probably ever make. He discusses why he wouldn’t do it regularly.
-He talks about various ways he could have “sold out” but hasn’t truly sold out yet.
This segment really resonated with me, and I think is truly important to remember:
“I’m going to to be totally fine continuing to do what I do and I’m not going to feel like oh I need to start going after list videos and reaction videos. And all this other stuff to keep this graph going up because this is the huge benefit of working for yourself. I am not a public company. I do not need to keep growing forever. This is not one of my goals. And it is very very important to keep that in front of mind. Like yes I have all of these spreadsheets. But these spreadsheet are not the measure of success. Like I view the measure of success as of having control over my life and being able to work on the things that interest me, and I know for a fact that the opportunity cost of that decision is enormous. Like I can put a ballpark figure of just how enormous that opportunity cost is and it is breath taking." -CGP Grey
I listen to this podcast, because few YouTuber talk about the guts of YouTube and their process like Grey does. There is silliness, random topics, and lots of apple talk, but it is probably one of the most valuable podcasts for me as a creator. I hope we can discuss this on a hangout at some point (I’m going to miss next week’s).
What do you think about how YouTube shows subscribers content and about “selling out”?
I love this podcast! This is exactly what I’ve wanted to hear CGP Grey talk about for a long time.
