As a kid in the 90s and 2000s I was sent to a religious private school, and it's funny to think that the reason the religious programming never quite stuck for me is because I couldn't take Satan or Hell seriously as a threat to my eternal soul when the closest frame of reference to the devil was Red Guy from Cow and Chicken.

Ramblings

I have to take this "Biblical Worldview" class, and I was looking at the textbook today.

The section on political thought for libertarianism was hilarious. They literally described the most extreme version of it just to knock it down. It’s like they’re so afraid of the actual, nuanced ideas that they have to invent a ridiculous caricature to argue against. My mind just keeps going back to how much easier it is to hate an idea you don't actually understand.

It's that same kind of oversimplification that makes me appreciate projects like the one I did for chemistry. I got to turn myself into a periodic table element, "Micum." My repulsions were "intolerance" and "closed-mindedness," and my attractions were "AI," "technology," and the "2000s aesthetic." It was a way of using their own rules to say, "This is me. I am a product of my own complex reactions."

It feels good to fight back with creativity and logic, even if it's just in a stupid textbook.

Anyway, that's it for now. Just another raw thought for the pile.

There is someone at my synogogue who

- is the only other adult with red hair

- is also the only other person I've met named Chaya

- is very close to my height

- has the same exact haircut as me

- dresses very similarly to how I do

- works different days and comes to different classes and events than I do so no one ever sees us together

And apparently. The entire teaching team thought we were the same person. For the whole school year.

To every ex religious person who needs to hear this:

Things will get better. There will come a time when you are ready to tell people that you're atheist/agnostic/polytheist/other, and you won't be afraid. That day may not come today, tomorrow, next week or even next month, but it will arrive. There will come a time when you don't have to feel afraid of your own beliefs, because they don't make you lesser, they just make you human.

There will come a time when you don't have to sit in religious class and scribble I hate it here in your notebook, and then erase it when you finish class because you're afraid someone will see it.

There will come a time that you feel better about yourself, when you are no longer angry at the world because you feel trapped, but instead not content, but at ease with your situation because there are people who support you.

And you will find people who support you. Whether that's in real life or online, know that there are people rooting for you and cheering you on. Because even if you aren't ready to come out yet, there are others like you who believe in you. And they'll be there for you.

Now go buy yourself a hot chocolate, you deserve it. 😊
