I already reblogged this but I want to add on a bit:

I see a lot of people saying that decriminalization/legalization would enable trafficking, but I just fail to understand how that would work (given OP’s statement). In places without legal abortion, the procedure is still done, only unsafely or with DIY methods, often leading to dangerous and life threatening outcomes for the people undergoing them. Similarly, when there is a blanket ban on all sex work, most protections that would have been afforded to workers or avenues to report abuse for trafficking victims are nonexistent.

When there is such legal and social stigma around being involved in the industry, does that not make it more difficult to get help getting out?

From my understanding calls to decriminalize sex work don’t usually mean, “ignore all human trafficking,” they instead mean, “allow there to be a state apparatus to support workers in this industry and protect them from unsafe and/or abusive working conditions.”

I think maybe I don't talk about how, as a former Sex Worker, these completely braindead talking points from SWERFs about the industry make it impossibly hard to have nuanced conversations about the actual risks, dangers, and broken stairs that exist in the industry. Imagine if, when people were working to make movie sets safer for talent and crew, some group was like "MOVIES DANGEROUS ABOLISH ALL FILM" and people nodded in agreement with that take and caved to it?

Like the industry IS exploitative often because having a conversation about regulation that actually moves toward legislation is nearly impossible. Politicians are afraid to touch the requests of actual industry workers because they will be bombarded by harassment groups, labeled as "groomers" or worse for even discussing our issues.

Instead it can feel like the conversation boils down to "Sex Work is empowering" vs. "Sex Work is rape" and those things are both absolutely insane, because sex work is a damn job???? It's not either of those things without additional information. My day job now sure as fuck isn't empowering. And I get threatened and assaulted here more than I did in any strip club, despite it being a "normal" job. The only difference is that I have avenues to escalate those things here, and people generally take me seriously when I do. Sex Workers need avenues like that too but you paranoia-stricken, self-centered, infantilizing mobsters don't want our actual needs to be met.

I finished the vest!!

There are points at the neck and armholes where there’s a lump of extra fabric from my steeks, does anyone have any tips for minimizing those without compromising the reinforcement?

I did pick up stitches after steeking to knit some edging, so the raw edges of the steek are technically “hidden.”

(For reference, I knitted this vest with sock weight superwash wool yarn, and gave myself 8 stitches for setting up the steeks, and cut between the middle 2 columns of stitches)

Sometimes it's Covid, sometimes it's years of developing undiagnosed and untreated arteriosclerosis and cardiovascular disease and having a massive cardiac event, and the "brief illness" is the time spent on life support until the family can be there to say goodbye to a warm body before the machines are turned off.

Now did having Covid advance the arteriosclerosis and cardiovascular disease and whack a few years off of the inevitable? Very possibly. It's going to be a while before we have some reliable science on that specific question, but we do know that a couple of the best things that people can do for their health, especially as they get older, is avoid getting Covid and get regular check ups to make sure they aren't developing cardiovascular disease, or are treating it appropriately if it's started.

Echoing prev here, there are plenty of ways to die that aren’t from COVID, but hey, COVID doesn’t exactly make the outcome better.

Also worth recalling that sometimes when we say someone “died of x” it’s worth asking whether we are discussing the immediate event that killed the person in question or if we are instead discussing the larger picture of that person’s health & lifestyle. Dying of aortic dissection is often a result of cardiovascular disease rather than a random event, but aortic dissection is a more precise description of the death itself than the disease leading up to it would be.

On Reading

In the 10 years that I have worked on sharing queer history, I have never been attacked as intentionally and with as much consistency as I have in 2026. Most regularly, I'm called a groomer or harassed for mentioning Palestine.

I joke about it to my friends, because I don't actually have anyone in my life under the age of 20, how could I possibly be a groomer? It is easier to cope with all of it when I can laugh with people. No one finds it funny anymore, not even me.

When the first waves came calling me an anti-Semite, I felt compelled to ask some of the Jewish people in my life whether there was something I wasn't seeing. They assured me that I was doing nothing wrong, and I dug further into my studies. The further I got into researching the accusations levied against me, the more I was harassed for the moments I shared of my journey.

As a 29 year old adult, when I share that I read queer (often specifically trans) books, the comments are predictable. When I share that some of the books I read include sex, things get worse. When I post a book that discusses the experiences of queer Jewish people during the holocaust, I know that there will be immediate backlash, and there is. Then I am asked to edit a book synopsis to remove mentions of genocide from a poetry book about Palestine.

All of this to say, I have experience in what upsets these people and it is books that are being targeted. It is reading, readers, and anyone who encourages literacy that activates the worst people to respond. Which is why I HAVE to keep pushing you to read more. Read widely, read anything, read books that disagree with you, read porn, read queerly, read physically, read ebooks, read audiobooks, and fight the book bans sweeping North America.

I need you to know that people get the angriest when I read, so I cannot take my foot of the gas, and I hope this encourages you to go to your library.

I loved watching that viral tiktok going around where a girl asked her classmates to read a sentence (that contained the word silhouette) and most of them couldn't do it. People insisted it meant all high school kids were illiterate.

No one stopped to consider... This girl was trying to make a tiktok. She probably sought out students she knew would fail. Barring that, she probably edited out the students who did well. We've seen happen with tiktokers and youtubers again and again. They're trying to be funny. They're cutting the footage to make a better video.

And most importantly, why are we assuming that this school is representative of anything? I don't remember where this school was, but there are bad schools all over the country. She might have attended a really shitty or really unfunded school. We have no way to know.

It's weird to me that people don't consider why a video or study was published before they take it as gospel.

While both phenomena are real, I do think it’s worth pointing out that not everything we attribute to these issues is actually caused by them in particular. Regarding lightbulbs and planned obsolescence, while there is a lightbulb that’s been working for about a century, it is dim as all hell and also very inefficient in its energy usage. Additionally, we oftentimes get so focused on how shit is bad now that we forget how bad it actually was before too? YouTube ads are annoying but TV commercials can take up almost half the run-time of the time slot allotted for a given episode so that’s also not quite as cut-and-dry as we make it out to be.
