Highly relatable, while not strictly about Faire folk. Watch with sound.
Ways the Faire has ruined me
“‘Tis the season?” No it’s not, the season ended a month ago.
tfw you're just trying to save some Faire pics to your computer so you can actually make some posts, but whoops seeing those characters again reminds you just how much you freaking miss them aaaaaannnd now you're caught up in melancholy and nostalgia.
Ways the Faire has ruined me
I am no longer physically capable of typing the word “part” without actively thinking about it.
One of these days i need to go through, locate all my garb, and figure out what still fits, what I'll keep wearing and what I should remake. And then toss everything that doesn't fit those criteria.
jtheobscure replied to your photoset “for @sandraugiga who wanted to see my garb. I’m the fat girl in...”
Wow! You are so awesome. To be able to make this stuff for yourself and friends? Wow! Kudos. I admire this so much.
Thanks!
See the thing is? I don’t think this is terribly impressive. With the SOLE exception of the corset, it is literally all straight seams. The green and orange set? Took me about a week and is in quilting cotton.
The corsets are a bit harder, but mostly because I have to make a new pattern for it each time and that requires a second pair of hands. They’re fiddly to sew, and zipties will break SO MANY needles when used as boning (I think the record is 3 in one evening before i threw everything across the room and went back to knitting). But if you can sew a straight line, you can make a corset.
here, have a link for how to make an elizabethan corset: http://www.elizabethancostume.net/custompat/ (actually, the entirety of ElizabethanCostume.net is hella useful... and OH! it’s updated since the last time i went looking)
for @sandraugiga who wanted to see my garb.
I’m the fat girl in glasses. You should ignore the Jared-sized asshole of an ex, although I made... at least the grey scale kilt and the blue shirt he’s in.
So... what I made in these photos (which are of varying degrees of historical accuracy)
Top photo (me and my b5f)
Everything that’s fabric you can see.
I’m probably wearing a corset under the kirtle, but you can’t tell.
Group Shot
coat the guy facing away is wearing (I think? May also be asshole ex’s coat in which case it’s not something i made)
all of b5f’s garb: shirt, skirt, kirtle, hat.
kilt asshole is wearing
corset, shirt, skirt, head scarf i’m wearing
kilt on my nephew (the toddler. he was so tiny then!)
Photo of me:
if it’s fabric, i made it.
I really need to learn how to do basic leatherworking
Me and asshole:
his kilt
my shirt and kirtle. No corset on that one because it was supposed to be self supporting. Obviously that bit of engineering failed in the face of my huge... tracts of land.
I apparently don’t have any complete photos of my (newish) viking garb? I have a few selfies trying to gauge fit or thoughts on the trim, but nothing after it was done. I started it after I got really self-conscious about my face online and how fat I felt. No one out here is doing viking yet, so it’s hard to get the bits and bobs you need to do it correctly anyway.
I want to join SCA since my local is pretty good about ‘hand sew if you have the time/ patience for it. If not, use your machine!’ But it meets on Wednesday evenings same as Supernatural. And frankly... I get more emotionally out of SPN than I do out of dressing up funny.
