It is a store that offers diverse products like fancy clothes, antique house equipment, amazing wine selection, Italian pasta, Portuguese delicious food cans, olive oils, old school vinyl and cd’s, carpets and the list goes on and on. The store is also a wine bar, an English style pub, which is an ideal place to go after work. With a good wine and friends, it’s the perfect place to end the day.

TABERNA DO CAIS DAS PEDRAS

WINE, FRIENDS & TAPAS!


 RESERVATIONS: 222 017 198 The  Taberna do Cais das Pedras is my favourite place to go out for dinner with friends. Of course if you are with friends you want good wine, good beer and good Tapas. For me tapas means noise, happiness & friends, which is exactly the combination that you will find in this awesome restaurant. It is located in a privileged area by the river which adds value to this place. The owner of the place is Isabel who brings lots of life to this small and busy restaurant. She was also the owner and the founder of the Taberna do barqueiro, a small restaurant with only 4 tables located in the heart of Oporto but the success of the place demanded something bigger. This cosy and welcoming place was the perfect answer for the demand and now it is always full of customers.

About the food, the Tapas are 100% Portuguese, Portuguese products, cooking methods and traditional plates. Some examples are, the ‘Pataniscas’, Portuguese goat cheese, ‘alheira’ and ‘Chouriço’ (Portuguese sausages), clams Portuguese style, ‘Moelas’, wild mushrooms and so many small and unique dishes. The prices vary from 1,5 to 7€ for the tapas and the wine is also very accessible with a great selection. Check the FADO nights on all wednesday's of the year! Go there and you will become a fan… I can bet you will.

PORTAROSSA

Portarossa is more than just an Italian restaurant, it’s THE Italian restaurant!

RESERVATIONS:  [phone]                         Hidden in the most beautiful zone of Oporto, the magnificent Portarossa. It opened its doors in 2013 and has enjoyed success ever since. The owners of Terra (posted on this blog) bought the property as an old but very pleasant restaurant and transformed it into an awesome project with delicious Italians delicatessens.

The space and ambience are very familiar and diverse. It is a perfect place to take your girlfriend/boyfriend, friends or family to experience something very enjoyable. The space is divided into an outdoor zone with around 10 tables, which is a very pleasant area ( the only problem reported by some friends are the chairs that are not so comfortable).The interior décor is modern Italian, very cosy and familiar.                Let’s move to the part that we all love … FOOD! These are pure Italian products that are used to create perfect Italian dishes. I should also say that they have a very good Italian-Portuguese wine selection and a perfect (one of my passions) ice-cold draught super-bock beer.       

A big and delicious bruschetta with salami and quail eggs.          

      Traditional Arancini, a deep-fried rice ball with cheese. 

          This is a combination of a traditional dish from Oporto, “Francesinha” that is made of meat and sausage toast with a beer and tomato sauce (may sound strange but its awesome…and FAT). In this occasion, instead of using bread, they use pizza dough to make a calzone and we pour the sauce on the top … EXPLENDID!                A meal can cost around 15-30€ and it is a guaranteed good choice for a business lunch, a family dinner, a sangria in summer. Go and try it!

BAR TOLO

Portuguese Tapas in a cosy environment and unique location!

RESERVATIONS: [phone] Bar Tolo is an amazing tapas and wine bar and that reflects in every way: the location, the building, the decoration, the environment, the splendid food and the welcoming service. I have a personal and special bond with this restaurant because it used to be a clothing store called ‘Fun Farrow’ where I bought my clothes when I was a kid. Fun Farrow sold clothes based on the Asterix and Obelix stories and these stories are also present today in Bar Tolo. The books are used as menus, which is a great idea and implementation. The concept of the restaurant exceeds a normal Tapas bar by being a new reference for Porto gastronomy. Thanks to the owner who has created a good environment,  selected an perfect wine list, he has made BAR TOLO the right place to place to have lunch, dinner, a glass of wine after work or even a cocktail before going out. Thanks to the Head-Chef David Bastos, a young talented chef with unique ideas and a fine technique, the food offered is just exceptional.                 Let’s see what BAR TOLO is all about…

The ground floor is where the wine and cocktail magic happens. It is warm and welcoming and a perfect place to enjoy some drinks combined with excellent tapas.                 HAPPY HOUR: MONDAY TO FRIDAY – 5pm to 7pm

The cosy room on the first floor allows all clients to enjoy a relaxed and memorable meal. There is also a small terrace on the second floor, perfect for sunny days. Now let’s see the FAT STUFF and the core of the restaurant, the FOOD. Chosen by the Head Chef his newest dish - perfectly sautéed scallops laid on green pea purée topped with a slice of spicy chorizo and sprinkled with crunchy prosciutto.  Just delicious!

The second election was an amazing veal loaf Alentejo-DOP garnished with sautéed greens, potatoes, olive oil and garlic sauce. Tender and memorable.

The prices can vary from 12€-25€ for lunch and 15€ to 35€ for dinner- reasonable price for the quality of food and service.  About 2 years ago, Gustavo (GU) and Susana (SU) got together to create an interesting and delicious project. The project is simple but strong and with proven success, Gustavo prepares wonderful sushi and Susana takes care of all the management, the calls, the deliveries, all the clients and the media.

Thanks to them I didn’t leave home to eat sushi for a long time. The sushi is excellent, the fish and all products are super fresh, well made and the variety and creativity is unique, I can risk talking about fusion sushi. One of the reasons why I am a loyal customer of  GUSHI SUSHI is because I always have the chance to try different sushi, with different sauces or even fish that are not traditionally used, but which result in perfection. 
It was through them that I first tasted sushi with meat, which can be controversial … but it works very well!

Regarding the price is very affordable and competitive, 32 pieces for 20€ (2€ delivery fee).

Not only because of the regard I have for both of them, I am a pure sushi lover and I love their sushi! I take this opportunity to give my Congratulations and thank them for giving life and flavour to the world of gastronomy!

PART III: A CASA GUEDES

Open since 1987 and still amazing today! A spot to take your friends and family, it is all about tradition!

Ready for Part III of our trilogy?

This may be one of the most amazing spots in Porto, known for its sandwich of “Pernil” with “Da Serra” cheese (Pernil is the thinnest part of the leg of either pork or beef. In this case roasted pork pernil). It was a secret known by the biggest food connoisseurs of the city but quickly the word was spread and I can say that all the “portuenses” know this famous spot.

Entering "Casa Guedes" feels like going back to the 80's. The Correia brothers, Maria Albertina and Maria Augusto are the proud owners of this house and they have seen thousands of different faces from different nationalities. Everyone, with different jobs, from different countries, at different hours, are welcomed as if they were in their own home.

The delicacies here are: Pernil sandwich, black pork sandwich, cured ham sandwich with “Da serra” cheese, salami sandwich, cheese mix board, “Papas de sarrabulho” (traditional dish made with pork blood). Pedro and I had to have a perfect end for this trilogy, Casa Guedes was the right and mandatory choice … We wanted to go out with a BANG!!! Two pernil sandwiches with cheese and two glasses of Espadal (amazing green-rose wine) .

PART II: CONGA

The best Bifanas in the heart of Porto! The tradition to the innovation with the same values since 1976!

RESERVATIONS: [phone] / [phone] Pedro and I set off for Part II of our trilogy, and after he introduced me to those incredible “Pregos” I had to introduce him to the best “Bifanas” of Porto. We walked down the street that houses the Porto Coliseum, and we reached the Bonjardim street, home to Conga, both the new and the old versions of the place.

The old Conga opened on May 30, 1976 by ​​Jose Manuel de Oliveira and Efigénia Fidalgo de Oliveira and more recently their son created the new Conga, keeping the old one open in order to keep all the values ​​, traditions and regular customers.

Bifanas and perfectly cooked quails were and are the main attraction of Conga. The bifana is another typical Portuguese dish it is made with pork and the recipe is … secret! With the new Conga came not only a modern restaurant and a modern image but also innovative dishes such as puff pastry bifanas (2.70 €), Portobello mushrooms, Portuguese sausage muffins, all these dishes at great prices between € 2 and € 7 .

Being a house of tradition, I made them my tradition. Whenever I return to Portugal I go and eat a bifana and drink an ice cold “Fino” (Draft Superbock Beer).

There are extreme cases of people that after being discharged from the hospital go directly to eat this awesome bifanas or even people who love them and take them back to Spain, France , Italy , Australia , China. With so many reasons, why wouldn’t you go and have a taste of the finest bifanas of Porto for yourself?
