Portuguese gastronomy is one of the oldest in the whole world, and as such it is also one which includes a large range of refined flavours. The Portuguese are the creators / founders of various methods of cooking and they have some incredible, typical and unique dishes.
Margarida is the name of the owner also of the restaurant that offers a dish that is part of Portuguese history, the “Açorda”. My opinion and the reason behind this recommendation is that this is surely the best seafood Açorda of Porto!
The Açorda is a dish with Arab origins. It comes from the word "Tharid" which translates to "bread crumble". From there comes the Açorda, from the Arab occupation of the south of Portugal and from a time of resource scarcity. Bread and olive oil were the main products available and are the basis of this dish, along with coriander, garlic and salt.
Margarida’s interpretation of this dish is excellent: a bread based dish served ... also in bread!
The restaurant is a modest, small place with 10 or 11 tables. Then again, that’s how it should be, traditional, warm and typical. It is a unique restaurant and is regularly visited by all the food connoisseurs of Porto (even all the great players of the best football team in Portugal, the FCPORTO ... being completely unbiased).
Whenever I have the opportunity and the food craving hits me, I go and eat this delicious dish, served by relaxed and fun waiters, that welcome all guests with a green wine (typical from the north of Portugal) and some jokes that make you feel at home. For less than 15€ you can have a very pleasant dinner (Margarida style Açorda 9.30€)
This is one of those secrets that must be revealed, everyone should visit this great spot!
