 This place is really a secret that everyone tries to keep to themselves but I decided to share it with you. The Adega S.Nicolau is an old wine cellar located in Ribeira, an iconic place of Porto that is visited by locals regardless of its touristic reputation.

With simple cooking methods such as coal grill, boil and roast, the most amazing traditional dishes come out of that small kitchen. The service is very good with some traditional roots whereas the wine selection includes some of the best Portuguese brands.

 RESERVATIONS: 222 017 198 The  Taberna do Cais das Pedras is my favourite place to go out for dinner with friends. Of course if you are with friends you want good wine, good beer and good Tapas. For me tapas means noise, happiness & friends, which is exactly the combination that you will find in this awesome restaurant. It is located in a privileged area by the river which adds value to this place. The owner of the place is Isabel who brings lots of life to this small and busy restaurant. She was also the owner and the founder of the Taberna do barqueiro, a small restaurant with only 4 tables located in the heart of Oporto but the success of the place demanded something bigger. This cosy and welcoming place was the perfect answer for the demand and now it is always full of customers.

About the food, the Tapas are 100% Portuguese, Portuguese products, cooking methods and traditional plates. Some examples are, the ‘Pataniscas’, Portuguese goat cheese, ‘alheira’ and ‘Chouriço’ (Portuguese sausages), clams Portuguese style, ‘Moelas’, wild mushrooms and so many small and unique dishes. The prices vary from 1,5 to 7€ for the tapas and the wine is also very accessible with a great selection. Check the FADO nights on all wednesday's of the year! Go there and you will become a fan… I can bet you will.

Is it the BEST francesinha of Porto? Tell me what you think …

RESERVATIONS: 22 205 2118                 Francesinha is one of the most traditional dishes from Porto and the discussion about what is the best one could take hours or days. I decided to talk about BUFETE FASE because it is a unique spot full of tradition and to respect the tradition they keep the structure of the business always small, just to maintain the awesome quality of the food.                 Around 30 years ago José Menezes Pinto opened the Bufete Fase, a small place that specialised in traditional hot dog’s, “Prego’s” (steak with bread) and Francesinhas. It quickly became very famous for its francesinhas and now it is the only dish they offer and they have their hands full all the time.

                One of the special things about this restaurant is that it only had 4 small tables that could fit 8 to a maximum of 9 what made this spot special and exclusive. Only a few people could eat these awesome francesinhas in one day. Recently they expanded and they have now 12 tables and they can fit 48pax at the same time in the restaurant.                 They do not make reservations so you should go early.                 The price for a francesinha with fries and a cold draught beer is 11,50€, reasonable price for the Best in the city. Go and try it!!!

THE BEST BURGERS IN OPORTO! NO RESERVATIONS                 MUNCHIE burger kitchen is the answer for the new burger trend with a huge demand in the city and World. If you go to Munchie today it will be full of clients and it has been like that since the day it opened. The burger trend came alive again but this time in no longer a fast-food industry, now it’s all about good products, good presentation, good flavours and tradition.

                Pedro Bessa (on the left) is one of the owners and the head chef of this burger kitchen. He is a talented entrepreneur who made this awesome project one of the most successful spots in Porto! One of the best commercial ideas that he had was to create a menu with 7 different burgers, each named after the 7 deadly sins. Check out your deadly sin…

                The restaurant is located in the Rua de Ceuta, the heart of Oporto and where all the young people meet before they go out. You can have an awesome burger with some beers and chill with friends until 2am, every day. We were used to link burgers to kids but in Munchie we have all different ages and segments, from families to couples, from business men to students.In short, it’s a place where food is the element that brings everyone together.                 The average price is 8€ for a menu of a burger, potatoes and a drink. You can add a desert for 2€.                 The restaurant has 3 different areas, outside area with 6 tables, a small yard with 4 tables and one counter and there is a new place room in the back with around 15 more tables. Do you think these 25-30 tables are enough? They could double the number of tables and they would still be full… that’s MUNCHIE success.

BRUSCHETTA & MONTADITOS

The south of Europe together in one amazing dinner: An Italian starter and Spanish tapas with a Portuguese touch!

Ingredients (14 Units)

5          Plum tomatoes 2          Cloves of garlic 1          French Baguette ¼cup   Olive Oil 6          Basil leafs 1tbsp  Olive oil 1tsp    Balsamic Vinegar Salt and ground pepper for taste

BRUSCHETTA METHOD (Turn on the oven to 200ºC) 1  Cut the baguette into slices 2 Boil the tomatoes for 1:30min, just to be able to take off the skin of the tomatoes. If the tomatoes are too hot, put them in a bowl of ice and it will help to remove the skin easily. Cut the tomatoes into dices, removing the stem, seeds and juice.  3 Place the slices of bread on an oven tray, brush olive oil on the top and roast it for 3 minutes. 4 Get the cut tomatoes and with your hands cut the basil leafs, add the olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt and ground pepper. 5 Rub garlic on the slices, add the tomato mixture on the top and… It’s ready to EAT! 6 Fatasschef way: make a simple pesto (I can provide the recipe) and spread it on the slice of bread before roasting it; make a tomato sauce, with tomato puree, tomato dices, black pepper salt and dried oregano and put it over the pesto; cover it with grated mozzarela/parmesan and put it in the oven for 5 minutes …. Delicious!!!

    MONTADITOS

1 Montaditos is a Spanish name for the small bread tapas, they resemble of the Italian bruschetta and there are no boundaries for the ingredients of the montaditos. Here I have 3 examples that I like to do and the FAT family loves it

Montadito left: salmon and shrimp paste (with Philadelphia and parsley) with a shrimp on top. Montadito center: Caprese Bruschetta (cherry tomato, mozzarella fresca, basil chiffonade) Montadito right: Pesto, prosciutto and fried quail egg on the top.

PORTAROSSA

Portarossa is more than just an Italian restaurant, it’s THE Italian restaurant!

RESERVATIONS:  [phone]                         Hidden in the most beautiful zone of Oporto, the magnificent Portarossa. It opened its doors in 2013 and has enjoyed success ever since. The owners of Terra (posted on this blog) bought the property as an old but very pleasant restaurant and transformed it into an awesome project with delicious Italians delicatessens.

The space and ambience are very familiar and diverse. It is a perfect place to take your girlfriend/boyfriend, friends or family to experience something very enjoyable. The space is divided into an outdoor zone with around 10 tables, which is a very pleasant area ( the only problem reported by some friends are the chairs that are not so comfortable).The interior décor is modern Italian, very cosy and familiar.                Let’s move to the part that we all love … FOOD! These are pure Italian products that are used to create perfect Italian dishes. I should also say that they have a very good Italian-Portuguese wine selection and a perfect (one of my passions) ice-cold draught super-bock beer.       

A big and delicious bruschetta with salami and quail eggs.          

      Traditional Arancini, a deep-fried rice ball with cheese. 

          This is a combination of a traditional dish from Oporto, “Francesinha” that is made of meat and sausage toast with a beer and tomato sauce (may sound strange but its awesome…and FAT). In this occasion, instead of using bread, they use pizza dough to make a calzone and we pour the sauce on the top … EXPLENDID!                A meal can cost around 15-30€ and it is a guaranteed good choice for a business lunch, a family dinner, a sangria in summer. Go and try it!

PHILLY STUFFED MUSHROOMS

Delicious stuffed mushrooms, an easy and fast starter that will amaze your guests!

Ingredients (10 mushrooms) 10         Portobello mushrooms 150gr   Philadelphia/cream cheese 50gr    Mayonnaise 50gr    Parmesan cheese 50gr    Melted butter 30gr    Minced onion 10gr    Minced parley Ground pepper for taste

  METHOD (Turn on the oven to 200ºC) 1 Clean the mushrooms and remove the stems 2 Mix all the ingredients in a bowl. 3 Stuff the mushrooms with the mixture and brush them with the melted butter. Sprinkle breadcrumbs on the top and put it to the oven. 4 Bake it for 20-25 minutes, check if they get brown on the top and they are ready to EAT! 5 Enjoy!

BAR TOLO

Portuguese Tapas in a cosy environment and unique location!

RESERVATIONS: [phone] Bar Tolo is an amazing tapas and wine bar and that reflects in every way: the location, the building, the decoration, the environment, the splendid food and the welcoming service. I have a personal and special bond with this restaurant because it used to be a clothing store called ‘Fun Farrow’ where I bought my clothes when I was a kid. Fun Farrow sold clothes based on the Asterix and Obelix stories and these stories are also present today in Bar Tolo. The books are used as menus, which is a great idea and implementation. The concept of the restaurant exceeds a normal Tapas bar by being a new reference for Porto gastronomy. Thanks to the owner who has created a good environment,  selected an perfect wine list, he has made BAR TOLO the right place to place to have lunch, dinner, a glass of wine after work or even a cocktail before going out. Thanks to the Head-Chef David Bastos, a young talented chef with unique ideas and a fine technique, the food offered is just exceptional.                 Let’s see what BAR TOLO is all about…

The ground floor is where the wine and cocktail magic happens. It is warm and welcoming and a perfect place to enjoy some drinks combined with excellent tapas.                 HAPPY HOUR: MONDAY TO FRIDAY – 5pm to 7pm

The cosy room on the first floor allows all clients to enjoy a relaxed and memorable meal. There is also a small terrace on the second floor, perfect for sunny days. Now let’s see the FAT STUFF and the core of the restaurant, the FOOD. Chosen by the Head Chef his newest dish - perfectly sautéed scallops laid on green pea purée topped with a slice of spicy chorizo and sprinkled with crunchy prosciutto.  Just delicious!

The second election was an amazing veal loaf Alentejo-DOP garnished with sautéed greens, potatoes, olive oil and garlic sauce. Tender and memorable.

The prices can vary from 12€-25€ for lunch and 15€ to 35€ for dinner- reasonable price for the quality of food and service. Kanpai Sushi Fusion is the name of this sushi restaurant that was born approximately two years ago on one of the main arteries of Porto, Avenida da Boavista.

The restaurant is so inviting, dark walls and white tables that make all clients to devote all their attention to what is served. Pure delicacies!

The sushi is really good, being in the top 5 of Porto. When referring to Fusion Sushi, sushi connoisseurs really expect an evolution of flavors, unexpected ingredients, sauces and garnish and completely innovative methods of cooking and preparation. The sushi offered by Kanpai is undoubtedly good but my expectation was to have more fusion, more innovation.

I've been in the restaurant 4 times and the service was good, I liked the food (always the same entry - fried shrimp and/or sweet and sour chicken satay) and I usually order the menu - festival sushi priced at € 22.90 where you can order any dishes.  About 2 years ago, Gustavo (GU) and Susana (SU) got together to create an interesting and delicious project. The project is simple but strong and with proven success, Gustavo prepares wonderful sushi and Susana takes care of all the management, the calls, the deliveries, all the clients and the media.

Thanks to them I didn’t leave home to eat sushi for a long time. The sushi is excellent, the fish and all products are super fresh, well made and the variety and creativity is unique, I can risk talking about fusion sushi. One of the reasons why I am a loyal customer of  GUSHI SUSHI is because I always have the chance to try different sushi, with different sauces or even fish that are not traditionally used, but which result in perfection. 
It was through them that I first tasted sushi with meat, which can be controversial … but it works very well!

Regarding the price is very affordable and competitive, 32 pieces for 20€ (2€ delivery fee).

Not only because of the regard I have for both of them, I am a pure sushi lover and I love their sushi! I take this opportunity to give my Congratulations and thank them for giving life and flavour to the world of gastronomy!

If I want to recommend TERRA, first I have to talk about the restaurant Cafeina and the Cafeina Wine & Tapas. The Cafeina will be analyzed in more detail on www.fatasschef.com because it deserves great honor by being one of the oldest and greatest restaurants in OPorto. 
The three restaurants are situated in the same street, they have three different concepts but all with excellent decor, ambience and unique dishes.

The cuisine at Cafeina is a combination of French, Mediterranean and International cuisine. The Cafeina Wine & Tapas is all about Spanish cuisine with Portuguese influences matched with excellent wines. Terra offers a Mediterranean and Japanese cuisine which appears not to match, but has proven and certified success.

Terra has a unique and tastefully décor, with a sophisticated touch that makes you want to enter, sit and enjoy wonderful dining moments. Regarding the food, I am a sushi lover and I am always in the search for the perfect sushi piece, so naturally I had to try the sushi. I had heard great things about this sushi and I chose to try the take-away and enjoy the cozy atmosphere of my home with excellent, fresh, perfectly white wine, a sauvignon blanc. Second time I chose the take-away option once more (photos), but the third time I went directly to the sushi bar and sat at the counter where I had unique, fresh and prepared on the spot sushi.

ICHIBAN

For Sushi lovers! A pure Japonese experience!

                                            RESERVATIONS: [phone]/[phone] When I speak of a pure Japanese experience, I talk about having contact with the Japanese culture through the environment, the unique food and professionalism offered by Ichiban.

Starting with the environment and decor, there is a sushi counter right at the entrance that introduces us to the Japanese cuisine and the sushimans that give us the perfect welcoming. Enormous windows give a depth to the cozy restaurant, which makes us feel like we are in inside of another gastronomy dimension. All the traditional decor, furniture, layout and organization of the restaurant takes us on a journey to a classy and traditional Japanese temple.

Masaki Onishi is the chef who takes the Ichiban to be more than a well-themed space to be the real deal. Not letting the incredible variety of sushi and sashimi amazing aside, from the miso soups to the Donburi or Nabe , from the noodles to the Natto, the Okonomiyaki and also the Tuffo, we have an huge variety of awesome dishes that make this place the FIRST restaurant purely Japanese (translation of "Ichiban" – First). The meal can be matched with Japanese beer, sake and traditional teas.

A full meal is around € 30, which is a unique and therefore accessible experience.

This was the last sushibar I visited in Porto, being one of the newest in the city. Situated at fifty meters from the sea and only five minutes from the Porto de Leixões, its proximity to the Port and the Matosinhos market guarantees fresh, local and incredible fish.

It was an experience that I recommend to everyone and with SUSHIARIA I learned one thing ... simplicity is the key to success! What can be applied to all cooking methods and to the right choice of ingredients.

Delicious temakis, innovative maki, uramaki, fotomaki, nigiri, sashimi and awesome Japanese beers, put together a unique and delicious meal for less than 20 €.

SHIS

For Sushi lovers! A tribute to Shis, one of the best places to eat Sushi in Porto!

Shis is located by the estuary of the beautiful Douro river,  which is the most stunning part of the city. The restaurant operates on a structure built on the beach, which provides a unique experience that is enhanced by the views over the sea and excellent dishes prepared by chef Antonio Vieira and talented sushimans.

Shis is one of the most entrepreneurial ideas of Ricardo Campos Costa, who is also the owner of a new restaurant called Clérigos Café & Brasserie located on the Passeio dos Clérigos downtown.  This new restaurant has multiple gastronomy concepts that work together perfectly and I will write a recommendation here soon.

The restaurant maintains high standards in both international and Japanese cuisine.  The right choice of ingredients and innovative ideas form unique dishes that make the clients want to return again and again.

The average price for a meal is 35 €, and it is certainly worth it.

BURI

For Sushi lovers! The best Sushi spot in Porto!

I had been told about this small and cozy sushi restaurant located in the city center so I decided to take the FAT FAMILY to try this new spot. From the moment I entered the restaurant, I could instantly feel the good vibes and uniqueness that were created by the inviting atmosphere of the place.

The concept of the restaurant is fusion sushi and it brings simplicity to a complexity of flavors, which results in a perfect combination. In Buri, it is possible to taste all varieties of the best fish, fusion of traditional pieces and unique products such as Kobe beef.

Prices are around € 12.50 for lunch and 16 € for dinner.

I have lost count of how many times I have gone to BURI and even though I visit many other restaurants, this definitely remains my favorite sushi place in Porto. This is more than just a recommendation, it’s a must! Visit Buri!
