For two people so passionate about cooking for one another, having one partner be on a restrictive diet is frustrating for the other. “You being vegan is like us sleeping in separate bedrooms with separate people,” he said.

Actually, it’s like she said “let’s sleep in the other bedroom for a change”, you said “NO, and if you insist on sleeping there, you will do so alone and we are sleeping with other people until you give up”.
There are literally so many middle grounds between separate shopping carts, separate cooking and separate dinners if you’re not in a relationship with a tantrum-throwing manchild. Here’s what my partner and I, on my not-optional restricted diet do: We shop and cook together. Sometimes he adds items to the cart I can’t have, like yogurts, chocolates, wine, or cheeses as a few common examples. Many of the recipes I add to our mealplan are flexible to have his items added at the end of cooking to his portion, so he often adds cream or cheese to his portions- and if I leave the kitchen, shrimp too (when we do things like chowder or gumbo). Or he says he wants to try it my way and we have quiche with nutcream and soy free, dairy free cheese, which he says is lighter tasting than the real thing and therefore easier to enjoy. Or we cook food that tastes great without any substitutions needed: Indian or Caribbean, for example.
He still eats lunches out, many times a week at work. He still travels abroad for work, eating doner kebabs in Berlin and Pain au chocolate in Paris, and giant dumplings in Beijing.
My partner’s best known dish is his Galician Seafood Paella. Don’t think my allergies don’t hurt him emotionally, but when I said, “let’s try Raw Veganism”, he said he would eat whatever I presented him with but wasn’t up to getting his head around spiralizers and dehydrator recipes himself, which seemed fair enough since I was experimenting. In the end, it was financial and logistical (shipping costs and air miles of foods grown) reasons that made raw not sustainable. As well as the fear that eating that many nuts and seeds would trigger yet another new allergy in me. The spiralizer gets used often though, and the dehydrator still makes great (and cheaper) alternatives to the gluten free section for sandwich wraps, and my boyfriend is supportive.
He is supportive when I suggest Auto-immune protocol paleo, or calorie counting, or the Fast Diet, or whatever comes next.
