The "restrictiveness" of keto
I've been seeing a lot of posts lately accusing keto of being "extreme" or "restrictive" and so on. These posts drive me insane.
So here's the deal. I have celiac disease, and I am HUGELY reactive to wheat. Seriously, if you want to kill me, poisoning by bread is the easiest way to do it. I get crushingly sick.
So I'm gluten-free. And no one says "wow, that's so restrictive. Must be unhealthy." Why? Because they understand that to my body, gluten isn't food. Eating it would be like drinking antifreeze. And no matter how good antifreeze might taste, no one looks wistfully at the jug in their garage and bemoans the "restriction" not to drink it.
For my body -- and my body alone, I am not speaking for anyone else's! -- sugars/starches are similar poisons. My blood sugar goes sky high when I eat them. My blood pressure goes up. My GI system goes insane. I get brain fog. I just can't process carbs very well.
(By the way, I'm not alone on this among celiacs. Prior to the discovery of gluten, the treatment for celiac used to be a starch-free diet, and people thrived! Perhaps we just don't understand celiac as well as we think. Who knows. All I know is what works for my body.)
And that's why I'm on keto. Because for whatever reason, my body can't be healthy with the addition of sugars/starches. And that's cool, there's plenty of other stuff to eat. But before you attack anyone for eating a "restrictive" diet for health's sake, think hard about what you would tell someone who is allergic to peanuts, or has Crohn's, or advanced kidney disease.
