The featured holy icon was painted in the first half – mid-15th century in the Church of St. George, Novgorod. As you see in the picture, it contains four different scenes, each bearing a religious symbolism important for the correct interpretation of the sacred image. In the icon, there are scenes of the Resurrection of Lazarus, the Holy Trinity, Candlemas, and Saint John the Evangelist Dictating to Prochorus. It is not often that you see works with such a combination of miniature icons at the same time.

Today we celebrate the Raising of Lazarus from the dead. On this day, Great Lent comes to an end and Holy Week begins. On the day before Palm Sunday, Jesus came to Bethany because his most beloved friend Lazarus had died. Lazarus' sisters, Martha and Mary, approached Christ in tears, saying that if He were there earlier, their brother would not have died. Jesus said this happened so that a sign might take place. Having wept for His friend, Jesus called out to Lazarus in the cave to come out. The voice of God penetrated the bonds of Hades and the soul of Lazarus was returned to his body. This miracle was performed as a prototype of Christ's resurrection Himself, as well as the general resurrection of humanity at the end of this age.
