I need someone to read the manga “what kind of empress is this?” And then talk to me about it so I can finally get all giddy and send message after message because I am so excited
Rude
I work at Bed Bath and Beyond in a smaller store in a small “city”. Today this lady came in and send our store has looked like sh*t for the past 3/4 years, she said it always looks like we are going out of business and that “the FAT LAZY ASS employees need to get to work and she is going to complain to corporate.”
I AM FING FRUSTRATED. Yes, there are a few employees (like everywhere) who need to do more work, but most of us in this small store bust our a$$. She was a grumpy (twice the size of every employee working, might i mention) lady. I would have taken the challenge to help her, but honestly. I don’t think anything would have.
But I have been and will be upset and thrown off for a long time because someone through that we were that bad.
Also super angry that she called the entire staff that day FAT and LAZY (3 girls, all under 5′ 3″ 150lbs at MOST, and actually all employees who work work work). Anyone of us would have jumped through hoops to meet this customers demands.
This is just frustrating and i’m trying to find a new way to express these retail horrors. Because some how, no matter how many compliments or achievements you do, it that cranky hag that has you leaving work feeling awful.
Retail Horror
Retail has given me experience like no other job I've had. I was working outside my store yesterday, since we had a summer sidewalk sale going on. This middle-eastern family came up to browse through the boxes. Everyone was dressed the way us Americans dress except whom I assumed to be their father. He had on a purple turban. I saw nothing wrong with this at all whatsoever. I'm not one to judge someone based off of the way they look. So I smile and I say, "Hello, how are you all doing today?" The mother and their three daughters reply with cheerful hello's, and are generally kind to me. The mother asks if I have a shirt in her size and I tell her that we have the same shirt in her size on the rack inside. She and her daughters walk inside, and before their father follows, he turns to me and says, "Whore." Now I assume that's because I was wearing a spaghetti strap tank in ninety degree weather, and that went against his culture. I blinked and said, "What?" And he replied, "Women in MY country do NOT dress like that. If it were up to me, I would have you beaten." Now, normally I respect cultures of other countries, but it's different when another culture comes up and starts pissing on my culture and tries to tell me that I'm wrong. If I wasn't working I'd have told him to go to hell. But, not wanting to get fired, I held my tongue and instead said, "Have a great day." He just scoffed at me and followed his family inside, leaving me feeling extremely attacked. This is one of the biggest problems with working retail. You're expected to just smile at them without defending yourself. You can't say anything to them without them accusing you of being racist, sexist, or otherwise. This is not the first time this has happened to me and it won't be the last.

Beginning at the end.
Sometimes beginning a story at the end of the day has a nice point of view. Unfortunately, there's nothing nice working retail. Introducing, my first Retail Horror Story. It's 9:45 and it's about 15 minutes to closing. Cash is done, front looks like someone dragged a body through it and Pharmacy could care less what's going on. It's been a day full of coked-up teenagers seeking to challenge death by drinking Red Bull and 5-hour energy. Praise Satan I guess? The aisles make Armageddon a desirable event. There's nuts in the shampoo aisle, cosmetics in the grocery aisle and a toy car on the floor on the route in between. The basket where we dump returns from customers who suddenly picked up a random item and decided to 'wait till they got to one of the registers and ask how much it is';ultimately rejecting it faster than a nerd asking a cool kid to prom is overflowing. Mark looks around, wondering why God is punishing him. He's just lucky his ONE (that's right - ONE) cashier is the good, loyal one - the one that's eager to work and doesn't mind staying late to get the job done - is on tonight. It's 9:54. Can you guess what hot mess is about to happen? A seemingly wasted, yet still functioning blonde woman stumbles through the doors. Attempts to take out her loyalty card, only to have dropped it somewhere - so she approaches the dilapidating coupon machine (which is also a price checker, ladies and gentlemen) - punches in her number and gets some random coupons. She screams in excitement - OMG! As if she was the girl in the infamous, yet catchy and chart-topping #selfie (yes with the hashtag) song character we love to loathe (and to some people, relate to). She grabs a basket, fills it with tampons, cosmetics and random crap she can use her coupons for. At 9:59, she fumbles onto the register exclaiming 'Uhm I have a return, but I lost the receipt. This makeup gave me an allergic reaction" (Any excuse for her ugly face, Mark's thinking). With a driver's license that's surprisingly real - she gets $6 store credit (wow - big spending bitch!). As the actual transaction begins (the return being a gross nightmare like a one night stand you regret), she says as the cashier begins scanning the items - Uhm, I sent a coupon to my card. Is it there; is it there? No coupons appear on my register screen, the way-too nice cashier says (I'd bitchslap this bitch so hard if there wasn't a camera - oh and if we were in Russia or some lawless country). She shows him the e-mail so he asks Mark to cancel (void) the transaction and we have to show this bitch how to use her e-mail. The coupon appears when the transaction is restarted and she dumps a pile of receipt paper from what looks like a purse onto the register and says 'Is there anything good there?' Turns out, everything was expired (like the condom her dad used) or had nothing to do with the items she purchased. She found a $5 reward that expired 2 days ago, but being the awesome manager Mark is - he honors it. Her final total is not what she expected, as the 25% off coupon she had on her card excludes sale items. She removes a few more items (into the return basket of no return!) and swipes her credit card. She asks to use the bathroom, but Mark says someone broke it on one of their drunken stupors (probably her parents making her). The woman leaves, happily couponed and we look at the mess that is 10:15 pm. The bathrooms still have to be cleaned, and the break room of horrors needs a scrub. That's a life of retail - can you really handle anymore after just that salty taste?
What I'm about.
I am a retail mid-level manager at a major U.S. drugstore. Here, I will post the horrifying stories about what I deal with on my 40 or so weekly hours trapped in a world full of coupons and craziness. Please spread the word and feel free to share your retail horror stories using the hashtag #retailhorror. Throughout this experience, I will be using aliases (obviously) to protect my job, so I suggest you do the same. Posting on twitter & Instagram soon too.
Thanks!
