We could all use a “hero” in our lives, or another one if we already have our fair share of gallant suitors. Calgary-born, Montreal based HERO sweeps us off our feet like a sonic knight with Dirty Work, giving us an indie-electronic tour de force anthem that fuses Daft Punk meets Chromeo-like disco-tinged electro with slick dashing R&B pop. Dirty Work is the title track from the artist’s new EP, out January 10th on Fool’s Gold Records. Sinful late night vibes abound as we dance our way through the evening to the seductive jam. For more of HERO’s synth pumping electronica and retro-pop, groove out to Stay The Night below, which he’s fittingly tagged “VHS POP” on Soundcloud. Pre-order/pre-save HERO’s Dirty Work EP, here.
I had a dinosaur and I kept it in the garage I fed him steak and chips he slept under my father's dodge he said "hey kid, wanna hear me roar?" ROAR ROAR now let me hear you roar! I knew a geeky girl she looked kind of like Bradford Cox she gave the best high fives and she always wore purple socks she said "yo James, burgers and fries do you realize? realize?" If I could go back in time I would love to see them again I would stop trying to impress all the cool kids that didn't wanna be my friend I would want to be weird again cause all the weird kids were better friends I would want to be weird again cause all the weird kids were better friends
A brand new song from joan has arrived just in time for my very first time seeing the duo live tomorrow night, when they’ll be opening up a long sold out show for half•alive at Popscene at the Rickshaw Stop! The widespread 80s pop resurgence these last couple of years have taken the world by storm, resulting in a huge onslaught of the sound, but joan has managed to stand out from the crowd with their effulgent retro-pop. On ‘drive all night’, Little Rock, Arkansas duo serve up lyrics that tug on our heartstrings, all wrapped seamlessly in synthwave beats. It’s the sort of song that John Cusack’s character would’ve blasted out of his boombox in that iconic window scene from ‘80s film classic Say Anything. It’s also the perfect soundtrack for a midnight drive around town with the person you love. joan gives us a modern take on what a John Hughes soundtrack would sound like today. Aside from their show tomorrow night, joan will be double dipping appearances here in San Francisco. They’re also playing the Rickshaw Stop on Tuesday, February 12th, when they open up for The Aces, with whom they’ve announced an extensive U.S. tour! That’s twice the reason to make it out for joan, and two times the blunder if you missed out on them both! Stream/download ‘drive all night’, here.
I always know we’re in for an enthralling treat when new Cruel Youth surfaces. While the duo had stayed silent for much of the year, these last two months have brought us two unexpected new treats from the project helmed by Teddy Sinclair (aka Natalia Kills) and her husband Willy Moon. Last month, they gave us dusty charred Devil In Paradise, and now they’ve followed it up with Portrait Of A Female, a tambourine jangling vintage pop song with a sweet 60s lilt to its rhythmic jaunt and plenty of those signature whiskey-drenched Cruel Youth vocals. Portrait Of A Female is Amy Winehouse gone Cults. In other words, we’re in love. SO in love. Here’s to hoping that these two new tunes are a precursor to much more Cruel Youth to come in 2019. Stream/download Portrait Of A Female, here.
Let’s go on a spacey grooving escapade with this new five piece named True Blossom. They serve up a whole lot of ebullient twirling dance pop and sultry strutting disco funk on their debut single Baby, our first taste from the newcomers’ debut full length, Heater, arriving January 14th via Citrus City Records. We’re hard pressed on this fine evening not to get up and spin all over the office to the swanky sounds of this glamorous throbbing introduction to True Blossom, who seem ready to blossom indeed with but one song. Hints of plucky pumping The Heirs or torrid whirling Powers fuse with the snazzy bedroom ambrosia of Men I Trust and the indie dance panache of Mausi on the synth washed, dreamy glittering track. You can grab the tune and pre-order True Blossom’s debut album Heater on Bandcamp, here.
As we’ve already mentioned numerous times, we had a colossal new music Friday last week, much fruitful with endless astounding EPs, albums, and singles. Well, this Friday might not fall short on expectations, either. Take for example, Fly By Midnight and their plans to release their new album Rerunning come November 16th. As if just that news itself isn’t heart fluttering exciting, the duo stokes the flames of our impatience with You Belong, a sweeping synthpop anthem with all the feels of 80s romance wrapped in its sleek synths and nostalgic vocals. But there’s a modern twist to the track too, with its throbbing beats and cosmic effervescence. You Belong is a must for fans of LANY, Great Good Fine OK, Flor, and many other retro-inspired bands and swooning acts we love. You can also stream this epic jam on Spotify or Apple Music, here.
