Review: The Song of Achilles
★★★★★
This book is so fucking good. In case you don’t know, The Song of Achilles takes a fresh look at the Iliad. It’s epic and powerful, but also so personal. The story is told from the point of view of Patroclus. It starts when Patroclus and Achilles are children, and follows them as they grow and fall in love, and are ultimately swept away to Troy. This book humanizes the larger than life figure of Achilles. I knew how Achilles’ story would end, but I was still surprised. I was still moved. The Song of Achilles felt like a modern classic; it felt like reading Shakespeare, like something that’s going to have some staying power. I can’t wait to read it again.
All of my reviews.
