Rewatching Fairy Tail episode 1 and thinking about a video I saw a long time ago about how magic in this universe is so commodified and is such a cynical take on the whole magical fantasy genre that I cannot accept that FT is often reduced to its fanservice.

Like, when we are introduced to this universe is not through the lens of someone who's fascinated by magic and its possibilities. Magic in this world is a product. Something to be sold, to be brought, to be used. And that's it. Even if we have Lucy standing as this character that doesn't know much at the beginning, she is not overly enthusiastic about it. We do not see Lucy gushing over this fantastical world. Magic simply is. It exists and it shapes this world and we'll discover that we have guilds and those answer to a corrupt Council and sometimes they also can't do anything when facing injustice.

And really, if it wasn't for the jokes, and the fanservice, this anime could be much darker from the get-go.

Edit: I'm not saying FT has no wonder over things, is just that compare the way MAGIC (not bonds, not friendship, not any of this) is treated in this universe and in other fantasy settings. Especially in the beginning.

Juvia was so neurotic during her fight with Gray, but like, in the best way. Like same babe!!! If I had a miserable love life (which I do) and a hot half naked guy with complimenting magic acts somewhat nice and respectful towards me, I would also fall in love!!! And if he then mentions that he doesn’t want me to kidnap his friend (a girl) then damn, maybe I’d get unreasonably angry and attack him too!! Forever a Juvia apologiser <3
