There’s plenty of fics about Kon hating being dehumanised, being shocked when not dehumanised, being turned on by being dehumanised- you get the point

I want a fic where he just doesn’t bat an eye at it, where he is so used to being referred to as an object it doesn’t even compute that it’s not normal. Yes, now, he’s acknowledged as a real person and treated as such, but it’s hard to think something is weird when you grew up with it. His first memories were of being in a lab and getting referred to as ‘project 13’, his only experiences of being a person were probably referred to in a future tense.

When he moved into the real world, he went by superMAN and everyone’s first reaction was to tell him- No you aren’t.

So even though he’s now referred to as a person, (as in he has actual pronouns now) , he still doesn’t have a name. He is still only halfway to personhood.

When he does get a name, it’s SuperBoy. At this point in time, he doesn’t have the best support system and has essentially gone from being an object to a glorified child star. Brilliant.

Shockingly I can’t imagine Rex Leech giving Kon a talk on why it’s wrong to be objectified.

By the time he does get actual guardians, (thank the Lord for Ma and Pa Kent) people kind of assume that he has had that talk. That he knows how he was treated in the lab was wrong. Heck- they probably think that someone has told him why how he was treated with Tana Moon was wrong! But no one really did.

His whole existence he has been objectified/sold/used, I can’t imagine he really knows why it’d be wrong if someone continued to refer to him like that.

Chapter Fifteen: The Secret

Jason called Dick the following morning to talk on the balcony. “Hey, Jason! What’s up?” Dick asked.

Jason turned on his nebulizer and put the mask over his mouth and nose, breathing in the steam. “Jason? Are you having trouble breathing? I can hear your humidifier over the phone,” Dick stated while tears streamed down Jason’s cheeks. “Do you just wanna hear my voice?” Jason didn’t answer. He couldn’t answer without sounding hysterical.

“Okay. Um, today I had breakfast. I don’t usually eat breakfast, so it was nice to sit and have a piece of toast and some bacon. I guess I could’ve had a BLT, but I was a little out of it. Roy’s working with a group of kids for the new Titans group. A lot of teenagers… pretty close to your age. I know it’s not the same, but I think Roy could probably use some help on dispatching—”

“No,” Jason wheezed. Gromit lay over Jason’s lap.

“Well, that got you talking, but I don’t think you called for speech therapy,” Dick half-joked. “You’re having a panic attack, and Gromit’s probably with you… So, you’re calling me as a solution to whatever this problem is. Maybe you should text me. I’ll stay on this call. The faster you tell me what’s going on, the faster I can figure out how to help you.”

Jason turned his nebulizer off and sent Dick a text message with shaky hands. He waited in silence while Dick mumbled the words to himself. “Bruce is fine. He’s a little stubborn and reckless, but he’d never leave you if he thought he couldn’t come home. Worst case scenario, he’s a hostage and his phone is broken. But he always has a plan. He always makes it home,” Dick reassured Jason. Jason sent a second message.

“Yeah, I can come stay with you in Gotham until Bruce gets home. Barbara told me you’re staying with your new friend. What are you gonna tell him?” Dick asked. “He doesn’t have parents, right? So, who’s he staying with?”

“His manager,” Jason answered as the panic started to subside.

“You’ve gotta be kidding me,” Dick sighed. “You want him to come stay at the manor for a little bit? I can be there around five this afternoon if things go well today, but I’d rather you not be alone when you’re like this… Did you talk to Dr. Bauer?”

“Dr. Bauer diagnoses me with a new thing every time I come in. Complex post-traumatic stress disorder, adjustment disorder, and now separation anxiety and major depressive. I don’t think it’s fair—”

“When did she diagnose you with depression?” Dick asked.

“It was fairly recent… I’m already on anti-depressants… And a lot of my—”

“Jason, it is okay to need help emotionally. I know you don’t want to bother anyone with things that aren’t practical. I know you like solutions… but you are struggling with your mental health, and you honestly owe yourself a lot of slack. You were left permanently disabled after experiencing the most traumatic experience of your lifetime. Don’t you think you’ve earned the right to feel a little crumby?” Dick interrupted. “Jason, you’ve gotta be honest if you’re gonna get better. You know that. You’re not hurting us. It’ll hurt us if you bottle this up to the point where you think you can’t deal anymore. Now, honestly, Jason… How are you?”

Jason burst into tears. “Not good,” Jason sobbed.

“I’ll be there in a little bit. Stay with your friend, Conner until I get back to Gotham,” Dick commanded. “I promise we’ll talk more later.”

Conner listened carefully while Jason vented to him, telling him every horrible negative thought he’d had since the incident. When Jason was done talking, Conner walked toward Jason and hugged him. Jason sobbed in his arms, and he apologized profusely until Conner cut him off. “It’s okay. I’m sorry that you were dealing with all of that by yourself. Listen, if you want me to go stay with you at your place, that’s fine. I can do that. I’ll be there as much or as little as you want me to be—”

“I can’t ask you to do that,” Jason cried.

“You didn’t ask me to do anything. You’re my friend, and you’re the first person to treat me like a normal person. I know I’m not, but I’m glad that you treat me like one anyway. Let me be your friend,” Conner whispered. “Okay?”

Jason nodded, and Conner smiled. “And for the record, you’ve gotta stick around for the both of us because I’m not getting any older,” Conner replied. Jason pushed his glasses up. “I’m sixteen forever. It’s a long story, but we’ve got all the time in the world to talk about that.”

Jason swallowed hard and shook his head. “That—”

“Don’t worry about it. That’s not a problem you can fix,” Conner replied.

Jason let Conner into the manor around two that afternoon, and they sat on the couch in the living room and watched TV after they settled in. Jason drifted off and started snoring while Conner flipped through channels. Dick waltzed in the house with a grocery bag, a suitcase, and a duffel bag. “Oh, hi, Conner. Thanks for staying with him. Are you hungry?” Dick asked.

“A little bit,” Conner replied.

Jason shifted uncomfortably on the couch before curling up over Conner’s lap. “How long has he been out?” Dick asked.

“Like ten minutes,” Conner answered.

“Good, don’t wake him up. I’m making dinner. Conner, did he talk to you?” Dick asked. Conner nodded. Dick glanced at Jason before meeting eyes with Conner. “How are you?”

“I’m fine. What’s in the bag?” Conner asked.

“Steak, broccoli, and rice. Oh, and I left the milk in the car. I’ll be right back,” Dick answered. Jason coughed and grabbed Conner’s knee. Conner placed his hand on Jason’s side.

Dick woke Conner and Jason up for dinner, and they ate at the coffee table in the living room. Jason didn’t have much to say, so Dick didn’t push him to talk. “Food’s great,” Conner complimented to break the silence.

“Thanks. How are you liking school? I wasn’t really big on school when I was your age,” Dick replied.

Jason finished eating and stared at his empty plate for a while until Gromit came over to nudge him. “Jason?” Dick questioned as he leaned forward and tapped Jason’s arm. Jason inhaled sharply.

“I’m sorry. I was thinking about something,” Jason whispered. Dick nodded.

“Okay,” Dick replied. Conner took Jason’s plate and stacked it over his. “Did everyone finish their homework?”

“Yeah,” Jason mumbled. “I think I’ll be right back.” He left quickly, and Dick covered his face.

“The pills make him nauseous,” Conner explained. “Dinner was fine.”

“Thanks, Conner… You should stay here for a while. Eventually, I wanna talk to you about something… Not right now, but soon… It’s nothing you did,” Dick replied. Conner nodded.

“Nice to know I’m not in trouble… When you were Robin before him, was it that crazy?” Conner asked.

“Things were a little bit tamer… I think the stakes are gonna keep getting higher,” Dick replied.
