Okay, so I'm re-reading all of SJM's books (well, Throne of Glass series, ACOTAR & Crescent City) before the new CC3 book comes out. And I've had some thoughts and opinions ... (I would also love if people wanted to share their 2 cents!)
𝑻𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒔 𝒐𝒏 𝑻𝑶𝑮:
・Okay, I guess I'll never have the same exciting feeling when reading this series
・It feels like coming home, honestly.
・When the book ended, I just ... I didn't want it to be over, I felt like Aelin when everyone was going back to their own kingdoms - just stay until the end of Winter!
・I cannot say how much I love Abraxos; he PLAYS in the FLOWERS, and he FALLS IN LOVE. Like??? Can we get a lil book on the Wyverns SJM please! (because technically the game of thrones dragons are actually wyverns. Dragons have four legs and a pair of wings, wyverns have two legs and wins that attach to the front.
・I can't picture Lorcan perfectly in my head and that drives me crazy. And I was also againt Henry Cavill as Rowan, but I can't unsee it. After watching the Witcher...
・
𝑻𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒔 𝒐𝒏 𝑨𝑪𝑶𝑻𝑨𝑹:
・I honestly do think Feyre is a bit of a Mary-Sue. Even after all these books, I still don't understand why a mother would ask her youngest to look after the two eldest? Her illiterate youngest child?
・And why is Elan planting FLOWERS in the garden? Why not VEGETABLES? Ffs, or at least edible flowers like wtf.
・Nesta ... I'm one of the people who understand her, but also ... coming from poverty myself, I know what it's like to
・Also can Feyre fall into her female rage a bit? I just feel like she has a lot of pain that she's pushed down, and down and down. She needs to ... have more healing.
・AND HER BECOMING PREGNANT GOD REALLY, it just kinda ... I hate that trope. I only like this trope with Katniss and Peeta: that's how it's done right.
・Having two sisters mated to two best friends, but then the third sister and best friend may not be mated?? It's either all in or all out.
・I wish there was some explanation about the magic involved in not only the mating, but also the cauldron. It's all too ambiguous.
・AND WHAT MAKES MOR POWERFUL?! "Her power is truth." What. Does. That. Even. Mean.
・I did like A Court of Silver Flames though. I thought it was a brilliant book about Nesta's healing.
𝑻𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒔 𝒐𝒏 𝑪𝑪:
・It took me a while to get into the book, but once I did ... omg, I have even more characters that I love.
・And I cannot wait until the next book comes out! Although there were some aspects of the book that I found boring; like the viper queen (if I even got that right)
・Also the audiobook for CC & TOG are much more superior than ACOTAR. Even though they have a 'dramatised version,' there's an even better one on Youtube by the reader hag.
・I miss Lehaba so much
・And I saw somewhere that Bryce is the long-lost ruler of a Prythian court? And that Azriel might be one of the Princes of Hel?
・SJM does a great job at forming groups that you feel apart of
・Some people find Hunt boring, I don't ... I, well I rank him above Chaol. Ruhn is cool though, Bryce is incredible. Though I hate when I look up fanart of her and it's just a skinny girl with red hair? She's got golden skin, she's fit but curvy, and I want to see proper representation.
At this point it’s starting to feel like she's kinda trying to make him some sort of villain in her own head just so she doesn't have anything to distract her from saving Nishi that she’s both determined and desperate to save. Part of it is imo that she's too blinded by her own pain to really feel anything else but also she doesn't want to let herself feel it (which sounds contradictory as fuck i know but it is what is) because she doesn't want to feel anything at all and even less something positive as she feels responsible for everyone that keeps dying around her and so she probably feels she doesn't deserve anything good but damn I wish she would chill a little
PETITION TO MAKE THE ZODIAC SERIES A BIGGER FANDOM
Repost this to make the Zodiac series by @rominagarber a bigger and more loved fandom!! It’s a great series and it should be more appreciated!! Repost!!!!
In the beginning of this book, it seemed like the author was falling back on some oft-used tropes. (ie: Self-sacrificing heroine who cares for useless family so they don't all starve to death.)
However, as the story continued, the initial "tropes" were turned on their heads. I was given an actual explanation that went a long way towards making me understand Feyre's sisters and their actions. Also, Feyre was not as self-sacrificing as she initially seemed but had deeper, more layered reasons for making the choices she did. I ended up really enjoying the fact that Sarah J. Mass turned an oft-used trope into something realistic and meaningful.
TWO:
All the settings were richly drawn. There were a lot of sensory descriptions given that made me feel like I was in the Spring Court with Feyre, or tromping through the woods hunting the Suriel, or thrown against the wall while Tamlin...oops, maybe forget that one...hehe
THREE
I didn't initially like Feyre very much because I thought she was going to be the standard snarky, all-knowing, I'm-the-only-one-who-can-save-us-all heroine that I am SO over. Luckily, I was proven wrong and ended up REALLY rooting for Feyre--especially throughout the second half of the book. She was strong, but she also reacted like a normal human would if they were put in seriously traumatic situations. I loved her character growth throughout the story. In fact, I totally fell in love with everything about Feyre...
FOUR:
The whole second half of the book had excellent pacing that kept me turning the pages as fast as I could. Feyre really came into her own throughout the challenges, and all her interactions with Rhysand were SUPER intriguing!
FIVE:
The author never shied away from putting Feyre in horrible situations and forcing her to make truly traumatic choices in order to save herself and the people she cared for. The horror of the situations Feyre was put in made for some gut-wrenching scenes that kept me totally invested in her story.
In Conclusion: I ended up really liking this book. I do recall that, when I finished this first book (I read the rest of the series before writing this review) I wished that I was more invested in Feyre's relationship with Tam. However, I should've trusted that the author knew what she was doing. Although Tamlin seemed sort of flat to me, and I didn't really buy into his epic love story with Feyre, there was a reason for their scenes being written in a specific style. For spoiler reasons, that's all I'll say about that.
The beginning of this book was a bit hard for me to get into. The first half is slower than the second half, which brought my rating down to four stars rather than five. All in all though, this is a book I'd definitely recommend, especially as it lead into the second book in the series: A Court of Mist and Fury (which will be my next review)
All in all, this was me at the end of the book:
What did you guys think? Do you agree with this review? Did you connect with Feyre right away or did it take you awhile? Were you rooting for her and Tam by the end of the story? Let me know in the comments! Thanks for reading!
