Today in the Department of Before They Were Star Trek Stars, DeForest Kelley guest stars in "Gun Duel," episode 12 of the fourth season of Laramie (original air date December 25, 1962). Kelley plays one of a trio of bank robbers who split up after their last job. The bagman is captured and sent to the Laramie jail after hiding the loot, and Kelley and the third man meet there to spring him or get the location of the stolen money from his girlfriend.

Richard Devon (born Richard Gibson Ferraiole, December 11, 1926 – February 26, 2010)  Character actor and voice actor who between the late 1940s and 1991 performed in hundreds of roles on stage, radio, television, and in feature films.

In the 1950s Devon began performing as a character actor in many Four Star Television series, although his work was not limited to a single  production company or network. He appears, for example, as Ed Pike in the 1959 episode "Yellow Fever” of the Western series Colt .45, which was produced by Warner Bros. and originally broadcast by ABC.

Devon's lengthy television credits include Richard Diamond, Private Detective (three episodes), The Rifleman (7 episodes), The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp, Johnny Ringo (in the episode "The Posse"), Space Patrol,  Trackdown starring Robert Culp (three episodes, including the pilot episode of that series, "Badge of Honor," which aired initially on Dick Powell's Zane Grey Theatre), The Tall Man, Gunsmoke (in the episodes "Ex-Con" and "The Quest for Asa Janin"), The Rebel, The Virginian (as Haskell in the 1970 episode "You Can Lead a Horse to Water) and its spin-off, Laredo, Daniel Boone, The Monkees, Lassie, The Twilight Zone episode "Dead Man's Shoes" in 1962, three episodes of Perry Mason from 1964-1966, and Mission: Impossible. Devon had a regular role as well as on the CBS series Yancy Derringer, performing the part of Jody Barker, a pickpocket and sometime cohort of the lead character played by Jock Mahoney.  He also played the role of Cole Striker, a crook, in the 1963 episode "Incident of the Buryin' Man" on CBS's Rawhide.  (Wikipedia)

The Comancheros - Action packed Wayne Adventure

As is usual with most John Wayne films, they seem ‘sort of familiar’, as we’ve likely encountered part of them on some western channel or classic movie channel at some point in the past. Last night we watched this Michael Curtiz production, and it was no different, the wife was sure we’d seen at least part of this one before.

After a seemingly unrelated bit of backstory involving Stuart Whitman (in a duel, getting mixed up with a girl on a river boat) John Wayne shows up as a texas ranger who arrests Whitman to take him back to Kentucky to answer for the ‘murder’ (outcome of the duel). He escapes, but then they cross paths again when Wayne is posing undercover as a gun dealer. They team up to deal with a gang of Comancheros selling guns and supplies to the Comanches, and of course the girl from the boat returns for some complications near the end. A big exciting wham bang finish that may or may not have influenced such films as ‘The Road Warrior’ and ‘Mad Max Fury Road’, and a fun colorful performance by Lee Marvin in an all too short a role.
