Pg 8 ???: Isn't this like, trying too hard to look cool, so you end up being lame? ???: How do you think you'll feel about this moment when look back at it as an old man? Akihiro(?): Huh, who knows. Pg 9 ???: All right! Let's head home! Pg 10 Isurugi reading Kudelia's letter: "...be pleased if you could take a look." Isurugi: "Sincerely, Kudelia Aina Bernstein" Isurugi: That concludes the message from the president of the Admoss Company. (typoed in the japanese text as "Atmos") Pg 11 Mcgillis: Good work, Isurugi. Pg 12 Carta: To a bright future! The sleeping dragons awaken! (Or like, These unpolished gems shine!) (Right okay wait uhh so when Carta has her blonde boy band do their like slogan thing for the orbital fleet, it's made up of 2 x Japanese 4 character idioms, like an idiom or whatever that can have a long ass explanation but is written in only 4 characters. The first thing she says here is another 4 character idiom. The second thing she says here, I don't think it's one, but I think the writer was trying to make it seem like it's another set of 2 x 4 chara idioms, like how she talks in the anime? Anyway tl;dr I tried to make these both four word phrases lol) Carta: To graduation, and our actions henceforth! Mcgillis: Gaelio, Mcgillis: to the future. Gaelio: Yeah!

Pg 13 Graduate Gaelio: To the future, Mcgillis! Garma'd Gaelio: Mcgillis?! Mcgillis: To the future. Pg 14 Gaelio: I see… Gaelio: From here on, I'll be counting on you! IBO Character Book (Post the Second)

As promised, the second post about the fantastic character-design-o-rama IBO artbook.  This post will be somewhat shorter--most of what’s left is the model sheet section, and that stuff is always less interesting to me than earlier design work--but hit the jump anyway, because even if the design sheets don’t inspire you, it would be a shame to miss the canonization of the IBO afterlife as one big hot springs episode.  

Model Sheets: Most of this section consists of the sort of art you might find on the character section of official websites--finalized images of the characters from different angles and with key expressions, along with color images of all their various outfits.  We all already know what the characters look like, so the close-ups of costume elements and particularly choice expressions are the gems from this section.  For example, there are a surprising number of undersides of boots pictured, so we can see the different tread designs!

But, for things that are actually interesting, here’s a set of images of Mikazuki, Atra and Kudelia’s bracelets.  The beads are all different!

Mikazuki’s bracelet, with a bead design of a crescent moon drifting in clouds, an allusion to his namesake.

Atra’s bracelet, with a five-petaled flower that could probably be a lot of things, but this being a Japanese show is probably a cherry blossom.  Unless anyone can read the text there and give me an alternative?  

Kudelia’s bracelet, with a lily of the valley motif that matches the necklace set she bought for herself and Fumitan.  This showcases Atra’s sharp eye, but also serves as yet another example of the show staff’s deftness with reference and allusion.  Lily of the valley is a flower associated with a number of traditional feminine virtues--humility, chastity, purity.  More pointedly, though, it has some alternate names in Christian tradition that reference the tears of Mary or Eve--and Kudelia is by far the character most associated with Christian imagery.  Another interesting note is a pagan association with lily of the valley, that it enables people to envision a better world.

Of course, it’s also an extremely poisonous flower, which I feel like Kudelia would hear and think woeful thoughts about her bloodied hands, and the sacrifices her dreams are built on.  It’s a heck of a flower choice, to say the least.

Meanwhile, in lighter fare, we have Zack here, by far the most expressive character in the model sheet section.  I particularly enjoy his sparkle-eyed expression on the bottom left.  (Note also the image of his boot tread pattern.  This section is full of those random bootprints.)

Tekkadan kids!  I’ve pointed out Embi, Elgar, Hirume and Trow before, but here are some others, for all your Ride’s Post-Series Dissident Faction needs.  (I leave it as an exercise for the reader to comb through the battle scenes and peg how many of these other kids lived, and how many are named solely so that Orga or Ride or someone will have something specific to yell when a mobile worker get blown up.)

Macky faces!  My favorite is 100% the sulky pouty face on the bottom right.  I love McGillis best when he’s having bad days.

And a Gaelio page also!  I included the full page for this one because there’s interesting tidbits all over it.  Good all-angle shots of his scar (and accompanying hatchet job of a haircut), some helmet schematics, and, most interestingly, maybe a clue about what’s going on beneath his collar?  

On the right side, in the batch of pictures of Vidar-with-helmet, there are two showing a series of thin plates curving down the back of his neck.  What’s going on there exactly?   In some of the color shots to their left, the multiple panels are reduced to a single one, positioned right at the hairline, but in any case, they seem to be integrated into whatever Gaelio’s wearing under his uniform coat.  My guess is that they’re mechanized enough that they can slide away to reveal the hook-up for the Type E system, but, while down, also provide a bit of protection for the same hook-up, in the way that the Tekkadan boys use those little metal domes over their Alaya-Vijnana ports sometimes.

This one got a bit cut off, but I really need to share with everyone the study in lampshaded laziness that are the designs for Corlis and Orlis Stenja.  Note that, not only is Corlis literally just Orlis with his hairstyle flipped to the other side, every single one of his expressions are just mirrored versions of his brother’s.  I’m actually a bit in awe of this.

In the same vein as the Tekkadan kids, some Turbines girls. 

Following the model sheet section, there are the requisite staff interviews, scattered with a few very sketchy bits, the highlight of which is this picture of Mikazuki: 

And then, there’s.  Well.  

THE END COMIC: 

Why is Ride trying to call Gaelio?  What kind of wordplay is going on such that the people whose names end in “-lis” (Noblis, Orlis, McGillis) now have chipmunk features?  Why is Ein wrangling them?  What are Gaelio and Julieta doing in the crowd welcoming Ride back to the land of the living?  Will all that steam be bad or good for Barbatos’s joints, and can we infer that the Gundams have a bit of life in them after all, if they go to the Afterlife Hot Springs when they’re destroyed?  What is Bael doing here on any level at all really?

I enjoy Mika with a water gun pressed firmly to Ride’s head, but I think the clear highlight here is the characters who have no shame to be lounging around naked in the hot springs versus the delicate flowers that are Carta, Iok and Akihiro.  Which type do you guys think your favorite character would be?

a great thing I found in Gundam IBO:

in season 2, episode 12, Mikazuki at the last minute shows up in Barbatos to save Ride from the mobile armor. The mech was obscured until the last moment because suspense so I wanted to look at things frame-by-frame in an editor to see how much detail they did or didn't draw

then Mika hits the mobile armor, and me wanting to see the frame where Barbatos’s fist just fucking clocks a humanity-destroying machine-monster because idk such a thing pleases me, clicked through and found that Barbatos did not punch it. Mika threw Ryusei-go the 3rd’s arm at it
