Stand tall, your father told you.
Be proud of who you are.
For your blood runs true, rich in history.
Where you walk, you carry the will of heroes.
And are blessed by the nobility of power.
Others look to you to show them the way.
The lowly and the loyal, sworn to serve.
Lesser souls in need of your guidance.
So stand tall for the ones who follow.
Who give you their courage and devotion.
Show them honour and a marshalling hand.
Be a star in a world beset by darkness.
If not you, then who?
The unworthy?
The unwashed?
Unthinkable.
Stand tall because you are strong.
And just.
And correct.
Stand tall to the bitter end.
For what will become of you if you don't?
"I can't die in a place like this!"

The Ice Flower Elegies
I’ve been thinking about smiles.
Why are you crying?
You are a hero.
Aren’t you tired?
Eat, drink and be merry!
Stand tall, your father told you.
You are no hero.
The world does not care.
A commemorative illustration and a 'thank you' message from Itou Yu, original character designer for Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans. From "Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans Otsukaresama Bon" staff doujinshi celebrating the show's finale. It's an elusive publication although I've seen it pop up on ebay. It's full of heart-wrenching sketches and illustrations like this one.
Was thinking about Carta again. How she’s the only female member of Gjallarhorn we see with any sort of power, and how she probably had to fight to keep that much power.
She’s had a crush on McGillis for goodness knows how long, but “senpai notice me” jokes aside, she also respects how hard he worked to get to where he is. I mean, doesn’t she directly point out how fast he learned to read at one point? He’s the only other person who knows what it’s like to have to work so hard to carve out that kind of power, and because she respects him, she wants him to acknowledge her.
She holds firmly to Gjallarhorn’s stated ideals of honor and discipline, and is one of the few non-corrupt individuals in the organization. She does her best to fight with honor, and even though her job in the Outer Earth Regulatory Joint Fleet is little more than a decorative one, she still does it with all she has.
Given the political machinations around her, she must have fought tooth and nail to keep what she has. I wouldn’t put it past Iznario to have schemed somehow to weaken her position in the Seven Stars and take her power for his house, and the same is true for every other member of the Seven Stars save for perhaps Gallus Bauduin. I’m also surprised no one attempted to marry her off that we know of. Perhaps her father’s will protected her on that, or perhaps she was simply too stubborn.
I don’t know, I think Carta is a fascinating character and one of many whose deaths point to what follows with Gjallarhorn as a whole—those who attempt to honor its stated chivalric ideals meet their end at the hands of those who abuse the system’s power.
Iron Blooded Orphans really is my favorite gundam, I think it’s the most cohesive and focused in its themes and characters. It’s also rich and subtle in details and greatly benefits from a rewatch. For example, Lady Carta is shown to have an honor guard of exclusively blonde men:
Which at first seems something she did because of her obsession with McGillis, especially since her character is presented as a disconnected fool. However, we do actually see where this group comes from, it’s just not directly commented on so it’s easy to miss.
Who else favored blonde boys?
