On my first day back at work after winter break, the streets looked like this:

On January 5th 2026 (and January 4th) there was a perfect storm of weather conditions where every single tree and shrub in Airdrie, Alberta, Canada looked like this (the street Christmas decorations hanging off the lightposts were also covered with this). You can't see it in the pictures, but the holes in the fence at the school I work at were completely filled in by a fine layer of the snowy ice too.

The snowy ice looks exactly like hoarfrost on steroids, but it's apparently something called rime ice.
