Cahergall Cashell (Ringfort), County Kerry, Ireland
The Irish National Heritage Park is one of the coolest places I've visited in Ireland. Not only does it preserve some actual nature, but there's also reconstructions of various (pre)historic houses and such - even a crannog! The photos above show:
-crannog, on a small artificial island on a lake
-mesolithic huts of hunter-gatherers
-neolithic hut of agriculturalists
-medieval ringfort
-Christianized middle ages

Winter in Scotland & Ireland
Part 47 - Fort on a Hill January 2017
We had another day of interesting weather. It has been quite windy since yesterday, and a storm came through last night. There are even predictions of possible snow the next couple of days, which we were a little excited about.
Our first stop was back over the border in the Republic of Ireland (co Donegal) at Grianán of Aileach (a hilltop ringfort on Greenan Mountain). It was sooooooooooo windy! We had to be careful up on top otherwise we would have gotten blown off! But it was very cool. We had it to ourselves for the most part, and there were amazing views of the surrounding area.
Upon leaving the fort, we got quite excited, as it then started to hail!! (obviously, we were easily excited on this trip). Looking promising for the weather predictions over the next couple of days.
...to be continued...
Trelleborg, Denmark
Trelleborg, a Viking ring fortress west of Slagelse on the Danish island of Zealand, is one of only seven known similar structures. In its day, the fortress was situated on a peninsula that jutted into the swampy area between two rivers. The swamp was connected to the Great Belt by a lake that could be navigated by Viking ships. Trelleborg is believed to have been ordered built by King Harald Bluetooth in the year 980 AD and it might have commanded the Great Belt and its sea traffic, between the islands of Zealand and Funen.
