They all felt it though, even in their sleep - a presence that made goosebumps rise on flesh and brought uneasy dreams, though they wouldn’t remember in the morning. Its passage made no sound, left behind no mark. The wind suddenly picked up, rustling through the leaves like so many voices whispering, then...silence.

Its task was complete. It was gone.

Animals, more sensitive to such things, saw it for what it was, and understood.

Death had visited their home.
