Serenity is the first place River can be an inscrutable brat and still be loved, and sometimes even understood. It's no wonder she bonded with the place.

Headcanon | River

River knew that by telling Mal about Miranda, he'd choose to go. And I think she knew that once they saw Miranda, they'd decide to act. She blames herself for Wash's death, because she knew, when deciding to tell Mal, that someone was probably going to die. The whole crew was probably going to die. She gave that decision to Mal because she didn't trust herself to choose, but knowing how they'd react places the responsibility in her hands anyway. She also blames herself for trying to pretend the choice wasn't really hers.

She'd still make the same choice every time. She and Mal are alike that way. They're able to make sacrifices, and that makes them believe they're bad people, even though they do everything in their power to save everyone.
