Day 17/18: What Books by debut authors am I excited about in 3019, and let’s see those GORGEOUS covers!! Day 19: My favorite writing advice: Every scene should be doing double work—or more! This means that quiet scenes could be doing both worldbuilding and rounding out a character’s development. Loud scenes could be moving characters from Point A to point B while also carrying the plot. This advice is from Maggie Stiefvater, who is an absolute maven of writing advice. I loved this so much that I put it in my dot journal as a reference tool. One of my favorite lines from my upcoming debut NAMELESS QUEEN has got to be this one: “We are more than what happens to us.” It is said by the main character, Coin, to someone she cares about who has just survived a tricky and dangerous ordeal. This line, to me, is at the heart of what I tried to write this book about. It’s all about becoming the person you want to be. The person you’re afraid to be. The person the world tells you that you CAN’T be. Who we are is not defined or limited by our circumstance or the expectations others have of us. So I have a writing space, but it’s in the basement, usually surrounded by laundry and the vacuum and dust bunnies galore. I can’t concentrate as well in public so anywhere that has light and fresh flowing air within my house ends up my writing space. ✨✨✨ Case in point: last night at 12:00 I had a writing epiphany for my conclusion and I was so thankful for Ann’s Bird by Bird cue card cure located in our bathroom. The toilet became my writing seat and the bath tub ledge my desk. Day 13: Writing space. I work wherever my laptop is. Sometimes that’s on my lunch break at work, in an empty office meeting room, at home on my bed, couch, or floor, or at a proper desk. Day 12: Non-writing hobbies. For me, this is the question of: What do I love? I love making art, taking photos, singing my heart out, writing poetry and music, throwing knives, and sketching faces until they are less-creepy and more-real. Everything in this heart is something I’ve created. I wrote a couple 40-second songs on flat.io. I spent a lot of time doodling on Snapchat (the surrounding black and white doodles and drawings), and just bought a new sketch book this week where I’ve been coupling new drawings with written commentary such as “draw a less-creepy face.” I am by no means an expert, but hobbies are hobbies because you love them. Good comes later. I love art and science and people. My hobbies are how I spend my free time when I want to nurture the parts of myself that still insist with childlike confidence that I CAN draw a human face that doesn’t look like a scribbled walnut. And you know what? Day 11: Share the funniest moment or character from your book. How could I not share the best terrible joke that I managed to slip into NAMELESS QUEEN? I thought for sure that my editor or copy editor would call it out for the cheese that it is 🧀 But it survived into the ARC, which is shown here. This is the ARC I’m passing along my close friends and family so they can let me know where they laughed or smiled, and I’ve included a couple other snarky moments!
