So the week got away from me but this popped up on YouTube and I have some thoughts. 1. Whoever cast Pamela Reed as Deeks's Mom deserves all the prizes. Like Eric Christian Olsen, she is as good at the heavy, serious scenes as she is with the hilarious, light-hearted moments. The two also had such chemistry it gave their on-screen relationship a lived-in feeling like they have been talking to each other for decades. Just great.
2. When Reed was hired, one article mentioned that seeing her would explain a lot about Deeks. Well, when she showed up at the end of "Citadel", I didn't think a woman wearing a black fancy dress with pearls quite fit that bill. When she returned in "Internal Affairs", Bertie had a planned joke for Kensi. Suddenly, she was perfectly Deeks's mother.
3. Bertie showed up when the main characters only had one introduced parent - Julia Feldman. Callen's mother was mentioned, shown in photos and flashbacks while his father was shown in old home movies. The Callen family history wasn't flesh and blood until Callen's dad showed up in mid-season seven. Sam's father was mentioned but unseen until late in the show's run. With Bertie, it was nice to see someone who had the chance to be around. The show spent the first five seasons with almost no recurring characters outside of Arkady. Bertie was part of growing the show's universe (and chatting with Julia).
4. It is 25-years after his father left the family and Deeks is still protecting his Mom. Deeks is a full grown man, lawyer, cop and semi-fed and still doesn't want to have uncomfortable conversations with his Mommy. Feels like family.
5. I am an East Coast person and I like living in New York (though the weather this week was its own unique circle of hell). Bertie's apartment, however, gives me thoughts. The ocean is right there, outside the window. I live half-a block from the East River, I walk along the East River all the time. I go to the beach all summer long (leaving tomorrow morning early). Yet, I envy that water view.
6. Always end lists on an even number.
