The quite tame/habituated Chorister Robin-chats of Nature's Valley (Garden Route, South Africa).
Spent the morning birding with a friend & his 9-year-old nephew, & as luck would have it, the local NGO that I used to work with happened to be mist-netting & banding/ringing birds, so the youngin' got to hold & release a sunbird! Little man was stoked, & we're hoping to make it to the estuary wetland/mudflats this weekend to see some waders.
Also ticked Barn Swallow for the home/garden list, finally! Up to 112 species now.

October 20, 2024 - White-browed Robin-Chat (Cossypha heuglini) Found in parts of central, eastern, and southern Africa, these robin-chats live in thickets and the edges of forests, often near water. Usually foraging on the ground, they eat mostly insects, especially ants and beetles, along with some fruit. They build open cup-shaped nests from dry leaves, twigs, moss, rootlets, grass stems, and other materials in cavities in trees, on stumps, among roots near streams, or in shrubs or saplings. Found in a band across parts of western and central Africa with a separate population in South Sudan and Ethiopia, these Old World flycatchers live mostly in woodlands, savannas, shrublands, and urban areas. While the details of their diet are not well known, they likely feed on insects, including termites and ants, foraging in leaf litter. They build open cup nests from decaying leaves, rootlets, and other materials.
