Mouse Trap (Final Rose)

Penny was very fond of her cat. She’d found Robo-Kitty in an alley as a kitten. He’d been badly injured. Despite the professor’s best efforts, the kitten had lost one of his legs. Thankfully, he’d received a robotic prosthetic that had been upgraded as he’d grown larger.

Robo-Kitty had gotten to live a full life as a cat, and he was quite a friendly fellow. It wasn’t at all unusual for him to crawl into her lap or the laps of her visitors for a cuddle. He was especially fond of Ruby and Weiss although the blonde did her best to pretend that she wasn’t a total push over when it came to the feline. However, Robo-Kitty had no problems exploiting his feline appeal, and all it usually took was a soft purr and Weiss would be giving him back scratches and belly rubs.

Of course, since the professor had built his prosthetic, it wasn’t just a prosthetic.

“Robo-Kitty...” Penny asked. “Did you use your tractor beam to capture that mouse?”

The feline had accompanied her on a visit to Sazh’s ranch - Penny very much wanted to learn how to ride a chocobo - and Sazh had suggested Robo-Kitty try his hand at clearing an old barn of rodents. The building had been badly damaged in a storm, and they’d been meaning to replace it with a better one for a few years. With demolition beginning in a couple of weeks, Sazh thought the cat might enjoy a good hunt.

Robo-Kitty raised his prosthetic, and the helpless rat was drawn toward him, suspended in a beam of energy. He cut the tractor beam once the rat was close enough, and the hapless rodent was soon devoured.

“That doesn’t seem very sporting,” Penny said. She’d been led to believe that cats were supposed to hunt mice and rats to display their extreme feline deadliness. Using a tractor beam seemed kind of unfair.

Robo-Kitty gave her the most feline of smiles, and his prosthetic whirred before firing a net toward another rat. The rat squeaked in disbelief as it was promptly dragged over.

“Hmmm...” Penny checked her files on the prosthetic. “Wait... I can understand a net gun, a tractor beam, and even a taser... but why did the professor add a grappling hook?”

She got her answer a moment later when one of the rats sprinted across a beam in a bid to get to safety only for Robo-Kitty to fire his grappling hook and snatch the rat as he swung past.

“Okay.” Penny nodded. “And this might explain why Ruby was cackling so much the last time she visited.” Penny continued to scroll through her files. “What?” She stared. “When the professor add this?”

Apparently, the professor had just added a new weapon to Robo-Kitty’s prosthetic. He was now the proud owner of the very first cat-mounted tranquilliser gun.

Author’s Notes

Robo-Kitty is not a cat to underestimate. However, his enhancements did actually come in handy one time. When Luna (Ruby/Weiss kid) was a toddler, some remnants from the White Fang tried to abduct her. Robo-Kitty was a very old cat by then, but he was able to use his prosthetic to ambush several of the would-be kidnappers.
