Colosseo Quadrato (Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana) ― Ernesto Lapadula
sometimes i look through the list of roman cognomina at nova roma for ideas to put on my list of names for students to pick from for my class and i really love the way they guide their members toward picking certain names instead of others. like your ass is NOT cato. go be bald
Look, it's me, in Italy, marvelling at the fact that 20 years ago, I wrote a book about that Roman Empire everyone's so obsessed with. What if there was a world where it was still around?
A modern world where the Roman Empire never fell. The teenage heir to the throne trying to figure out if that car crash that killed his parents was really an accident. A fierce, spiky girl trying to save her brother from crucifixion. It's hard to believe that it's been this long, but yes, 2025 means the first book in the trilogy (Romanitas, Rome Burning and Savage City) has been in print for 20 years. Yes, I did in fact write it as a toddler. If that sounds good to you, the ebook's just £0.99 for the anniversary all of November.

A short story about the difficulty to communicate, to say something meaningful when you can see the person you really need to talk too. It’s about distance, about silence, about what is not said but still understood.
There have been a number of incidents of racism and sexism that have made headlines in classics, but one of the persistent offenders seems to be the Paideia institute:
https://classicssocialjustice.wordpress.com/2019/10/17/statements-on-the-paideia-institute/
I have personally got a couple of independent confirmations of their disrespect for women and minorities from women though some back channels. If you search "sportula Paideia" in the latin facebook groups and on twitter more will come up.
In response to these incidents and in the context of incidents of racism at major classics conferences many folks are boycotting the Paideia conference in Feb in NY and planning an alternative conference at the same time nearby. I think this has a real chance to be an inclusive alternative, so I hope that folks here will consider coming and even better offer to give presentations. If you go to the link ourvoicesinclassics.com you can suggest presentation ideas or nominate someone to present. I am going to present on how and why I not only teach by speaking Latin but also ask my students to speak as well and how that opens the language up to a wider audience.
romanitas replied to your post “Sometimes I can't tell if your blog is run by an anti or”
if i never see the word anti again it will be too soon
you and me both lmao
like i’m not an anti or a reylo because i don’t identify myself based on a fucking ship?? the entire concept of anti-ism is absurd andd the idea that anyone thinks i’d waste my time and energy on actively not liking something has severely misjudged me
people on this website waste too much time giving a shit what other people think of the fictional relationships they do or do not like.
jyn x cassian, reunion cuddles
It’s been longer than Jyn can keep track of, but she knows Cassian the same way she knows herself: too much and not at all. Their paths don’t cross as often as she might like, but they’re at war.
And she understands the delicate position that Cassian is in, more than she did when they first met. Spies are essential to war. Especially good spies. Jyn is not any good at that shit. Her emotions get the better of her before she can get control of them. It makes her a good soldier; well, it makes her a good fighter.
“They told me you would be briefing today.”
Jyn leans against a wall, outside of the landing pad. She’s been here for hours already.
Cassian stops short as he’s trying to blend into the crowd. “They told you?”
“I can be persuasive.”
He arches a brow at her, the barest hint of a smile on his face. “I’ve seen what you call persuasion, Jyn.”
“Then you know it’s effective.”
She’s reaching out for him even as he’s stepping closer to her, her fingers twisting into his shirt to pull him forward. Her arm is trapped between their bodies as his presses her closer into the wall, arms around her tightly. He smells too clean to be the real Cassian, but she doesn’t care. She buries her face into the crook of his neck and breathes him in, letting him hold her.
