Part 2 of my trip to The Met! This set is all pottery! #themet #photgraphy #romanart #romanpottery #museums https://www.instagram.com/p/CgWuaeIuID2/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Experimenting with making beads from Roman Greyware pottery. I find lots of Roman Greyware shards in our garden while digging and around the field edges on my dog walks. It’s the most common type of Roman pottery made in many different places in Britain. I mainly find the sides of cooking pots and it was nice to find this flat piece I could work with possibly from a plate. It dates from around the 1st and 2nd centuries AD but in some places continued to be used until the 4th century. I’m thinking these repurposed beads would pair nicely with repurposed Roman glass to make a rustic bracelet or necklace. . . . #greyware #romangreyware #romangrey #romanpottery #britishpottery #upcycledplates #potterybeads #upcycledpottery #potteryshards #potteryshardjewellery #lincolnshire #romanremains #romanlincoln #lincolnshire #madeinlincolnshire #archaeology #scavenger (at Harrowby, Lincolnshire) https://www.instagram.com/p/CLZf3hmBjUU/?igshid=gqcaery6hiu7
Well, the OmVed clay pots survived their bisque firing. Will give them their final firing next week as still tossing up whether to glaze them on the inside or not. I have a low fire ash glaze recipe to test using Borax Frit to bring down the melting point of the ash to around 1080, if it works I think I will got for it??? 😬 #terracotta #terracottapots #roman #romanpots #romanpottery #foundobject #wildclay #handmade #bisque #bisquefire #spoon #food #foodjar #orange #nearlythere #onthewheel #pottery #ceramics #sitespecific #earthenware #lid #thebrockleypotter #twisted (at Brockley) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBlQ61bDlf7/?igshid=1b26h9m0932o9
Another Roman inspired pot. This one is going to be ash glazed using ash and clay from the @omvedgardens site. The pattern is based on patterns found in the pots at the Highgate Roman Kiln site. Hopefully I can make a nice runny ash glaze that will pool in the detail bringing the design to life? I am going to finish the pot with a spoon handle using the Victorian spoons excavated from the site, the third photo shows a mock up but I think I need a different spoon or to work on the shape of the one in the photo? Anyway fingers crossed this one fires ok and I can get the ash glaze to work well 🤞🏼 #roman #romanpots #beadedrim #beadrimmedjar #romanpottery #flutedneck #pottery #ashglaze #spoon #pottery #potter #handmade #pattern #spots #lines #omved #thrown #makersgonnamake (at Brockley) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBVLKieDEdM/?igshid=xo1kiu0nuqep
Totally new ground for me! A Roman style beaded rim vessel made with the clay I excavated from OmVed gardens. Highgate was home to one of the largest Roman potteries found in the UK and as well as being made from the same clay the form of this pot has been directly influenced by the pots that were made there. The pottery Specialised in making vessels and utensils for food and drink which links very well to the sites current use. I will also be using some of the Victorian/Georgian spoons that were found on site as the handles for the lids on these pots to further represent the historical social culinary narrative that flows strong through the OmVed Gardens site. Fingers crossed 🤞🏼 they fire OK #roman #romanpottery #beadedrim #romanpottery #foodjar #food #pottery #wildclay #terracotta #terracottapots #spoons #highgateromankiln #romankiln #romanhistory #omved #thrown #clay (at Brockley) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBNYBlxD-qq/?igshid=17g1knb66vqjg
We think of glazed pottery as starting with the Islamic empire, in the 700s AD, but this glazed green jar was made at Raqqa in Syria in the 200s AD, half a millennium earlier. Syrian glass makers knew how to make glazed pottery - it just didn't catch on until they needed it to imitate Chinese porcelain. But why not? I would think it would be worth doing just to make it easier to wash the dishes. #raqqa #syria #glazedpottery #glassmaking #historyofglass #romanpottery #louvremuseum #parisfrance #washingdishes
