Anne, Gilbert, and the Love We Overlook
After watching episode 17 of Anne Shirley anime adaptation, I have thoughts. Anne keeps rejecting what is clearly a very real and tender love with Gilbert, and while it’s frustrating, I also find it painfully realistic.
Many of us grew up on stories where love had to be overwhelming to be true. We were taught to crave intensity, mystery, the kind of passion that pulls the rug out from under your feet. So when something steady and kind and rooted in friendship comes along, it feels… boring. Like it lacks spark.
But often, the “spark” we’re chasing is just emotional chaos... because that’s what we were taught to call love. And the sweet, stable kind? We don’t recognize it, because no one told us that real love might look like that too.
Not saying women should “settle” or accept anything less than what they deserve. But I do think our expectations of romance are shaped by fantasies that don’t always prepare us for real life. And sometimes the quiet love we reject is the kind that might actually last.
(I’m anime only for now—haven’t read the books yet, but I’m planning to!)
