On April 23, 1998, the divisive episode of "Skin of Evil" aired for the first time on Star Trek the Next Generation. While it was written by Joseph Stefano and Hannah Louise Shearer, it was rumored to be one of the scripts illegally tampered with on behalf of Gene Roddenberry by his his lawyer Leonard Maizlish as part of the ongoing behind the scenes drama of the early show. It has been reported that Symbiosis had been scheduled to air at a different time, but Crosby had asked for the order to be switched so she could appear in that one. Denise Crosby had grown frustrated with lack of use and development of her character, Tasha Yar, and had been asked to be let go of the series. Yar became the first main crew member of an Enterprise series to die and not be resserected. Both fan and crew dissatisfaction with Yar's last appearance, being killed by a black goo monster, lead to her making an appearance as an alternate reality version of her character in Yesterday's Enterprise (1990). She also replayed the character in the series finale All Good Things..., in scenes that took place prior to her death. She also made an appearance as a memory in the STNG spin-off Picard episode "Surrender". Most notable, she returned to the series as the half Romulan daughter of a version of Tasha Yar. Crosby devised the character herself. The episode introduced Lt. Baji, played by Juliet Cesario. While technically Warf took over as head of security in this episode, he didn't change his costume till the next season. The episode took place in the year 2364.
