I didn't have "huge Shinsengumi shitstorm on Twitter" on my 2025 Bingo card, but here we are.

Yamagishi Miki, who is descended from Matsudaira Katamori on her mother's side, and Tokugawa Yoshinobu on her father's side, recently made posts and comments on her Twitter regarding the Shinsengumi.

She said it has been passed down in her family that Matsudaira Katamori only used the Shinsengumi because he was short of manpower in his position of the military commissioner for Kyoto, that they were a bunch of non-samurai thugs, that is was considered disgraceful to even draw your sword for any reason as a samurai, and that you could never be a real samurai unless you were born and raised as one. (Over the course of various posts and comments.)

When some descendants of the Byakkotei, of shogunate retainers, and of Aizu samurai disagreed with her statements and found them inappropriate for a descendant of the Tokugawa to make, she blocked them, which drew additional criticism. People then also started attacking her ancestor, Tokugawa Yoshinobu, saying that he abandoned his loyal troops in the middle of the battle of Toba-Fushimi, so how dare he (and how dare his descendants) denigrate the ones that continued putting their lives on the line for him and the shogunate.

I think people who have studied the end of the Edo period and the Shinsengumi were already well aware that yes, there were some thugs within the unit - especially prior to the purge of Serizawa's faction. And that a fair number of its members, including Kondo and Hijikata, were not born samurai, but that also many of them were. So it's not even like people just want to sugarcoat or ignore the real history by saying that part of it didn't exist.

I think what angered so many people is that Yamagishi-san is only acknowledging the negative, and by saying this is how her ancestors always viewed them, even though Tokugawa Yoshinobu made them hatamoto.

On a side note, some of Twitter is using the cake icon 🍰 as a stand-in for Tokugawa Yoshinobu because he was also known as 慶喜 (Keiki), which also happens to be the Japanese pronunciation of the English "cake".

I can't tell if it's bad or not that I cannot dislike any ninjago season ever?? Like yes, literally EVERY season has its flaws ik that but like ...... man ... I don't see why people hate crystalized sm to the point of telling beginningers to skip it?? I don't understaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnd

Idk I just really love the show and I'm aware of it's flaws I just...can't hate a season from a show I hold so dear to me?? It's like I'm literally incapable of it . Or maybe I just love Ninjago that much and always have to the point of not being able to hate any season

And like yeah the season has flaws but every season does, but every season also has good things about it too yk?

I'm starting to believe that the reason Bryke made THAT movie is because if they made season 4 of ATLA then Zutara might have gotten even more scenes together.
