a long time ago, there were two lovers. It was a taboo love back then because they were both men. Unfortunately, they got caught one day. So they were brought before village heads for a hearing about their affair.
The outraged village heads upon hearing the issue of the lovers decided to ask the priests of the mountain temple to give the lovers as a sacrifice for the goddess in return for rain to help with the drought situation in the village. As priests couldn’t go against village heads, they had no choice but to agree with their command.
The lovers were locked up in the temple basement and an announcement was made to all the villagers that a huge festival is to be celebrated in 7 days for the sacrificing of these lovers to the mountain goddess to impress her and ask rain as a blessing.
The lovers knowing that they will be able to spend only a few more days together, vow to spend it loving and caring for eachother and not worrying about the sacrifice. They were well fed, dressed & taken care by the priests to make them very appealing as the sacrifices for the mountain goddess.
For the next few days the whole village is working hard and preparing for the festival including the priests who were continuously doing prayers to summon the goddess. The lovers were trying their best to remain positive & happy in their last days but soon enough their fear creeps inside them.
The whole village awaits for the goddess to appear while the priests offer prayers continously without food and rest. After 7 days and 6 nights of continuously praying, the mountain goddess appears.
The mountain goddess who was summoned asks for the reason they invited her to this beautiful festival that has the streets lit up with beautiful lanterns, decorated with beautiful flowers, men and women in beautiful traditional clothes, food, drinks, games & joy everywhere.
The priests relay her the whole story about the lovers, drought, village heads commands and the sacrifice while the whole village are watching her awestruck with her beautiful form. She listens to the priests patiently but slowly her rage increases with the progression of the story as priests relay it to her.
She is now trembling with rage. She asks the villagers if the reason of the festival was the sacrifice? The villagers, frightened with her rage yet agree and tell her that it is to only appease her.
The mountain goddess asks in disgust, “Do you think I would eat my own children, the children of my own village and be happy about it? What kind of mother do you think I am?”. She then agrees that as a mother of the village it is her duty to punish her children when they go astray.
And then orders for the lovers to be presented before her. The lovers were brought before her. Lovers on seeing her angry yet beautiful form feel relieved. The goddess upon seeing them, asks for their names. One man tells that he is Kwak Aron while the other tells his name is Choi Minki.
Aron gathers all his courage & confesses to the goddess that they knew it is a taboo love and tried to desperately suppress their love for each other but they failed. Upon seeing Aron’s bravery, Minki too tells the goddess that he is scared but he is glad to die in the hands of his beautiful mother.
Moved by their confessions she hugs them both and smiles lovingly at them. She then says that even after their courageous words, she has to punish her children for the wrongs they do. Hearing this, the villagers cheer loudly. This makes the goddess go into a fit of rage again.
The mountain goddess then announces that she will punish all the villagers, village heads and the priests for celebrating the killing of lives in the cruelest form and witch hunting the lovers only because of their innocent love.
She then announces that she will not help the drought that was the result of their own actions against mother nature & that it is time they take good care of their environment and nature.
To keep them all in check of their actions she declared that she will make the two lovers as the new heads of the village & she will grant them with a unique ability to each.
One sees the things that cannot be seen with naked eyes. The ability to see human emotions, lies, greed, etc. While the other can give a command that can solve any problems of the village. The ability to be smart enough to command the villagers.
But she keeps a limit to their powers. Because powers can turn the kindest of humans to greediest beasts. She tears two pieces of fabric from her own clothes and gives one to each. She asks Aron to cover his mouth and Ren to cover his eyes with the cloth.
She asks them to only remove the clothes when they absolutely need the ability and to never misuse her gift. Because she will always have an eye on them and punish her kids if they make mistakes. And with blessings for their love to prosper, she disappears.
Minki rushed with emotions and hope takes Aron’s hand into his and says “will you be my eyes and let me be your words forever?”. Aron is beyond happy upon receiving Minki’s proposal and accepts it with joy. And they live happily ever after.
